JOHANNA LUMBRA Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 6, 2011.
JOHANNA L. LUMBRA EAST FAIRFIELD - Johanna L. Lumbra, age 73, passed away at her home, with her loving family at her side, Sunday morning, Dec. 4, 2011, following a long, valiant struggle with cancer. She was born Feb. 27, 1938, in St. Albans, the daughter of the late Floyd and Maxine (Depatie) Lumnah. Jo was a 1956 graduate of Enosburg Falls High School. Shortly after graduating, she married Lynford Lumbra on Sept. 12, 1956. In 1969 Jo and Lynford purchased what would be Lyn's Market in East Fairfield and operated it until their retirement on Aug. 18, 1999. Jo and Lyn purchased the store from Lyn's father, Hardy, whom had purchased the store in 1949. Jo was a faithful member of St. Anthony / St. Georges Catholic Church in East Fairfield and belonged to the St. Anthony Holy Rosary Society. She was also a member of the East Fairfield Fire Dept. Auxiliary, East Fairfield Social Concerns Committee, and the St. Anthony / St. George Lawn Party Committee. Jo enjoyed making quilts for her grandchildren, sewing projects, making personalized Christmas tree ornaments, playing cribbage, gardening, knitting, baking, reading, going to their camp and attending her grandchildren's functions. Most of all, she loved to spend time with her family. She was also very committed to fundraising events for various non- profit organizations, especially the American Cancer Society in honor of her sister, Elenor, and most recently the Lamoille Area Cancer Network. She is survived by her husband, Lynford Lumbra of East Fairfield; her children and their spouses, Colleen and Arthur Sauve of Milton, Chris and Nancy Lumbra of Essex Junction, Craig and Joan Lumbra of East Fairfield, Carrie and Peter Chlumecky of Hinesburg and Cory and Tammie Lumbra of Vergennes; her grandchildren, Chad Sauve, Casie Adams and her husband, Zack, Cayla Sauve, Kyle, Johannah and Lauren Lumbra, Callie and Celsey Lumbra, Nicholas, Lynn and Max Chlumecky, Phillip and Taylor Pidgeon and Reid and Ross Lumbra; brothers-in-law, Richard Colburn of St. Albans and Ray Morris of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Jo was predeceased by her mother, Maxine (Depatie) Newell; her father, Floyd Lumnah; and sisters, Elenor Colburn and Jacqueline Morris. Jo's family wishes to give a special thank you for the wonderful care she received from Dr. Marc Greenblatt, Jean Fay, Janet Ely, the nurses in the chemo unit and the nurses in Shep 4. We will forever be grateful for the wonderful care she received, allowing her another two+ years to be with us. Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 116 Church Road, Fairfield with Rev. Leonodas Laroche celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in St. Isidores Cemetery in Montgomery Center. Visiting hours will be held Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. Private messages of condolence may be sent to Jo's family online through www.spearsfuneralhome.com. For those who wish, contributions in Jo's memory may be made to the East Fairfield Fire Dept. I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am that your mom is gone. She was always so kind to me, making me feel like I was a valued member of the community, even when I had just moved to E. Fairfield. She explained some of the quirkier community members to me so I wouldn't take their behaviors so personally. I loved how she and your father always had penny candy for the kids. I'm glad my children got to experience having a store like that in town, they loved going down there. And for me, too, the store was a welcoming community meeting place that added so much to our quality of life. Your whole family seemed to work there on and off, and I'm glad I got to meet all of you. You were lucky to have her and she was really lucky to have all of you. My sincere condolences.

In my mind I will always remember, when I was a child, my many visits to the store where I was always treated like one of Jo's own children and where Lyn always snuck me a piece of cheddar cheese. A part of our community, a part of our lives. She will be missed.
