John Barrowclough Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 6, 2009.
John Barrowclough passed away May 2, 2009. The world lost a very humble and caring man. John was born February 17, 1930 in Croydon, Pennsylvania to Mary and David Barrowclough. He enlisted in the Army the day he turned 17 and set off to see the world. Stationed in Germany he met the love of his life, Ingeborg Lammarsch. Married for the past 59 years, they had three children, Edith, JD, and Patrick. John is survived by his wife and children, as well as five grandchildren (Rebecca, Brandon, Adam, Julie, and Ethan). John served honorably in the Army Ordinance Corp. for 26 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1973 from Rock Island Arsenal, Moline, Illinois. He served throughout the United States, as well as Germany, England, Saudi Arabia, Libya, and Vietnam. He was selected to attend the military language school to learn Arabic for his postings in Saudi Arabia and Libya. He was the commanding officer at Erie Army Depot in Port Clinton, Ohio, when it closed in 1966. Shortly after retiring from the Army he returned to work for the Government at Rock Island Arsenal until he retired in 1996. Soon after John and Inge moved to Colorado Springs. Although retired, John stayed busy helping Inge run an antique business and volunteering on a regular basis at the Air Force Academy where he recently received the President’s Call to Service Award for a lifetime of volunteerism. John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Through the years he coached Little League, acted as a Scout Master to several Boy Scout troops, and played hours of games with his grandkids. He enjoyed the outdoors, and especially liked to camp, hunt, and ski. He continued to travel, and in recent years he and Inge have returned to Germany many times. They have traveled with their family often, to places as diverse as the lush tropics of Hawaii and the sparse landscape of Russia. John had a strong sense of honor and a deeply held sense of devotion to God, country, family, and friends. He had an honest grin and a mischievous sense of humor. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. A visitation is scheduled from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Wednesday, May 6 at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday May 7 at the Community Chapel, 5134 Cathedral Drive, U.S. Air Force Academy. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718, www.cancer.org.
