I knew Dr Barsa many years having been part of his pain management team along with Drs Forman & Parada. He was an extremely talented anesthesiologist, a favorite of many general surgeons. His post doctoral pain management training was at the renowned University of Washington multidisciplinary pain management program. He brought that innovative pain management treatment approach to Tampa and established a multidisciplinary pain management program at St Joseph's Hospital. On a personal level, John was a warm, affable, humorous, generous guy who people were attracted to. Why am I writing this today? Because a close friend called and said her brother in law was in excruciating pain and could I recommend a physician specializing in pain management. Immediately I thought of John, then realized he had passed away. Unfortunately I do not believe his type of expertise is available in Tampa any longer. It's a cliche, but he is a doctor and friend who is dearly missed and not likely to be replaced. God speed John!

I have just learned Dr. Barsa passed away. I started seeing in in 1994. He was my pain management doctor for at least 15 years. What a wonderful man and provider. He was warm, caring, attentive, sharp minded and he loved the kids. He always took time to play with my kids when I took them with me on my appointments. They always loved going with me to see him. He was the most forward thinker and the best pain management provider. He truly was ahead of his time. I felt how much he cared along with the enormity of his knowledge at all times. If you never had the chance to just meet him, you truly missed what a BLESSING he was to everyone who encountered him. When I drove past his office in Tampa I wondered why it was sitting vacant and it prompted me to do a search. Unfortunately I learned why. He cared so much I thought he would never leave those that needed him to assist with their pain management. I’m truly saddened for the loss of him in this world and for his family. Since he was that giving to his patients imagine how giving he with his family. Their are no words to express how much this world and his family have lost. A TRULY WONDERFUL PERSON. YOU WILL BE MISSED.

He help me with my back pain, had 3 herniated discs. He injected me the epidural in 2008 and I have not had any serious back pain ever since, just minor pain I can handle. He was great, I just found out today he passed away. Rest in Peace.

I just found out today that one of the most extraordinary men I've ever known has gone to be with the Lord. Dr John Barsa was such a fine man. Dr Barsa became my doctor around 2012-2013; I was miserable at that appointment in so much pain, first thing he did was get a blanket to put around me and then he told me it's okay Bella I'll take care of you. My name is Tammy but he always called me his Bella. He worked and worked for many months until he found just the right amount and what he needed to give me so I could live somewhat of a normal life. Wants Dr Barsa worked his magic & I was able to be a wife, mother and grandmother to an extent again and to the best of my ability and no the pain was never completely gone he made sure that it was tolerable and that I could live life the best I could. I always told him how much I loved him, he was so sweet and coming from out of town my husband Chuck & I to stay in a hotel so seso he could check on me after surgery a week + and if I didn't call at right away or wasn't on the minute,he would call the hotel and have them them check on me or he'd be on his way. That's just the type of doctor/man he was, whether it was 10:00 in the morning five in the afternoon or midnight if I nee him he was there. He gave his patients his self completely at the expense of his own personal life.I want his family to know so many people he helped so many people he cared for and I give you my deepest condolences with much much respect as Dr. Barsa like I said was one of the finest men I've ever known. I know he was tired and he was ready for retirement though selfishly as his patients we didn't want him to go anywhere it saddens me to know that he didn't get to enjoy his retirement long but now as he walks with his Lord Jesus he can retire and have sweet peace for eternity. You rest in peace my sweet Dr Barsa, my heart Is sad but I will always be your bella. Thank you for everything that you did for me. Fly high Dr Barsa fly high. ❤

John Barsa would be the first to admit by telling a joke he wasnt perfect. He was encouraging and helped me overcome adversity beyond what seemed possible. I have lost 180 pounds with the help of Mauricio Orbegozo after John retired I knew he would live long. His work was like air to him second to his family. I know he truly loved me. He requested I be evaluated inpatient and get off of all medications before he would treat me. My MRI would allow me to take pain medications the rest of my life. Im off of all opioids and getting back to work after 20 years. He always praised my successes in life in business and the film industry. He would introduce me as a movie star after Bay News 9 did a story on our bakery which they aired 72 times because the phone rang off the hook. When Ive only been paid as an actor five times due to illness. I did work behind the camera for 15 years. Im going to try to get back at it as a writer. I had several surgeries including bilateral hip replacement and a near death experience of a nasal esophageal abscess in my spinal column. Everyone else thought the pain was in my back and John ordered an X-ray of my hips and it was 4 years too late my lymph system below my hips was permanently damaged but, Dr. Barsa said, youll get better you always work so hard, eat right and exercise. Keep up the hard work. I did wait and heard him yelling at his TV about Obama care ruining medicine forever. He blew off steam which is shown to be healthy to yell and scream about things you cannot control as long as you get back to your task at hand, contrary to popular beliefs on anger. What a wonderful gift he was to me and so many others. I will miss him and wish I would have taken a picture with him and Paul Newman when I worked on Blaze. John, treated me like I was family and hugged me like a father when I was suffering. I thank God for John Barsas heart, soul and mind. I only wish he would have taken better care of himself. He told me to and I did and Im so much better because Id John, his staff and so many others who helped me because of Dr. Barsa . I actually moved from Louisiana to see Dr. Barsa. I wasnt getting better and Louisiana is dead last in the nation in health care. Thankful! Jon was a Master in the Art of medicine, I will miss him.

John Barsa and I worked together in those very early days of pain management protocols with Sammy Lipton at Walton Hospital in Liverpool in the late 1960's. He was incredibly kind and caring to our patients and so, so competent in his management of very difficult cases, usually presenting at very late hours in the operating rooms!! Thank you John for the memories and may you rest in peace. My condolences to your family. ❤

Dr. Barsa helped me when no one else would! Took me from bedridden to a working member of society. Allowed me to earn for my family and be a part of my children's lives. He had the insight to hire Gail Sadler who is one of the best medical professionals I have known. I know he is in heaven running things there in the same kind and insightful way he ran his office. Best wishes to his family.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Dr. Barsa's passing. I worked with him last year and last communicated with him in December 2017. Dr. Barsa served as an expert witness for me in a case involving pain management To call him the "father of pain management in Florida" is certainly appropriate. He dedicated himself to the practice and spent a lot of time educating others on chronic pain and how it must be treated. I found him absolutely delightful to work with; he cared so much about the subject. He was funny and had a zillion stories to tell. We all enjoyed being with him for his hours long deposition, even opposing counsel. I spent time with him separately and he loved talking about his family. The pictures reflect his love and devotion to those closest to him. He will be dearly missed by all of you who knew him so well and all of us who had the privilege to work with him. I have a copy of his last deposition if any one would like a copy.

I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Barsa. I was fortunate to worked with him over the years. He truly was a pioneer in the field of pain management. He was kind enough to participate in two clinical trials with me. I always considered him one of the best in the early and current days of the field of pain management. I will remember him as a kind and generous physician who had he ability to make all around him comfortable and happy. There is a place in heaven for Dr. Barsa. RIP.

The death of a loved one, especially one as loved as John was, is never easy to process. As an only child, Paul has had an extremely difficult time with the suddenness of his father's passing. They were so close, and he still looks at his phone waiting for those daily texts and phone calls. With us living in Colorado and the time it took to arrange services around Easter Holy Week, the past few weeks have been very difficult for logistics in addition to our grieving. We are so grateful to our family for all their help. Thank you to Claude (Paul's mom) for being boots on the ground in the whole process, Yves for his wonderful hospitality and Larry and Pam (my parents) for coming to Tampa to help with any little thing we asked. The connections we have made to relatives whose names I had heard many times but not had the opportunity to meet in person is a true blessing that has come from this incredibly sad event. A special thank you to Marc Nahas (John's nephew), Elias Lilo' Sarkis (John's cousin), and Mallane de Jong (John's cousin) for doing the readings during the funeral mass. To everyone who travelled from far away to be there, we are so grateful. We are also very proud of John Gavin' and Max, our boys and John's grandsons, for being the Communion gift bearers - we know their Papi would have been so proud of them as well. We were so pleased to meet and reminisce with the family, friends, colleagues, and patients that came to the services and reception, and know that he will never be forgotten.

This man was know by many names like, Dr. John Barsa, MD, PA, Anesthesiologist, Pain Management Physician, Medical Director, Chief of Anesthesiology for International hospitals, the man who brought Pain Management to Florida many years ago, author of numerous medical school textbooks, & a Vegas-loving gambler. He was all those names & many more to so many people, but to me he was my Poppy...my stepfather...my dad. He called me his princess, his bella, and the girl and daughter he always wanted. He spoiled me beyond my wildest dreams, never saying no to anything I asked of him. He always gave generously to everyone, front the heart. At a dinner table with rich and famous people, he would always be the one who reached for the check and paid the bill! He was generous to a fault. He loved sports and his televisions...if they came in a bigger and better model he needed an upgrade, even if his new one was just a few months old. He loved telling dirty jokes, and we never ended a phone call without him telling one of his off color jokes and both of us laughing hysterically at it. He always said funny things like, What is this Mickey Mouse thingy, seventh avenue, Monday comes too soon, and so many more. He loved fancy suits and ties and socks...he loved them! He had expensive jackets, handmade at the finest stores, shoes from Italy and ties that were so expensive I could work all year and never afford them. He always smelled like he poured an entire bottle of the most expensive cologne you could find on his head, but you knew when John Barsa entered the room. He & I were inseparable. He fiercely defended me & I him.We could go long spurts without talking or seeing one another, but if either of us needed the other, we both would drop everything. Today, I am hopelessly broken at the loss of this person who was so beyond precious to me.He loved me for me, never wanting me to be different or change. It's a loss I'll likely never get over. My heart is broken. I love you, John

My Poppy was so special. He loved me so much. His favorite thing to do with us was to spend time at the hotel and swim in the pools. He was so fun! He let us play with Biss Biss, his cat. He was a great Poppy. I love him and all of his Egyptian stuff. He was also very funny and told funny jokes. He was so special to me. I love you very much, Poppy. Love, Preston Elias Rice

Where does one begin......as a very young adult he was intimidating, as an employee he was BOSS, as a teacher he was captivating, most importantly as a friend, he was AMAZING. I spent many seasons of my life as his side kick...what I learned during those years will be forever cherished. Some days were good and some days were bad (some really bad) but in the end we'd share a coke out of the small fridge and laugh about the day finally behind us. Watching him work his magic and turn tears into laughter was the best part of my job. So many stories of lives he changed. The gratitude. He was an amazing physician and a dear friend, we were all family. I am thankful for the memories.

I knew from the first day we met (as a patient) that Dr. Barsa was exceptional in so many ways. He continued to help me with his compassion and extraordinary abilities and understanding. Words can simply not express my sense of loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to Johns friends, patients and family. He will not be forgotten for the many people he cared for. Even on my worst days, he always had something to say to encourage me and often leaving me with a chuckle. John will live on through the love of those he devoted his life to.

I just learned of Dr. Barsa's passing today, and my heart has been heavy ever since. I was a patient of Dr. Barsa's for 17 years, and boy am I glad I found him!! Through his compassion, diligence and vast knowledge of medicine, he helped restore quality of life to me, and helped me maintain it. He always listened to me and always remembered even the most minute detail of my medical history. He was there to help me through numerous surgeries, and always encouraged me with his humour even through my failed back surgeries. His patients meant the world to him, and you could see it through his unfailing care of them. There was and will only be, ONE Dr. John Barsa. Rest well sir, for you lived a full life and deserve some peace... You are dearly missed...

Dr. John Barsa was both a colleague and a very dear friend of mine. When I first started in pain management in the 1980s John was always there to bounce off complicated cases. He was always there for me, as he was for others, and I will truly miss him. It was only recent that we discussed working together again and we both looked forward to that day. I Was deeply saddened and dishearten to learn of Johns passing. John was one of my oldest and dearest friends. Our friendship spanned over many decades and countries Egypt, the UK and Sweden. Throughout, we shared life's ups and downs and as the true friend John was he always lent an ear and advice through life's more troubling times. Moreover John was one of the most generous and kind persons I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. The photo is from the last time I had the honour to guest John, back in march 2017. Doctor John Barsa was indeed a legend and a pioneer in pain management. In the early 1980s he was only one of three physicians in the entire state of Florida who were recognized as pain management specialist. He practiced pain management with compassion and dedication before there were professional pain management organizations and before there were training programs. He traveled internationally to acquire many skills that were offered to his patients. He dedicated his career to helping pain patients
at a time in history when other physicians regarded these patients as undesirable and difficult. There will never be another like him and I am blessed to have known him. He exemplified the best in our profession. Hell never be forgotten and will forever be missed.

I appreciated his wisdom, humbleness, sincerity, and friendship over the years. Goodbye my friend, may the wind always be at your back. Dr. Joseph Rashkin MD.

It is difficult to express in words how much John Barsa will be missed; he helped so many in extraordinary ways. Not only was he an exceptionally skilled physician, he was generous in his profession, his community and profession. His friendship was unbendable. A wonderful and dedicated family man, he was in constant contact with his son and grandsons. As a young man he was a star basketball player and passed his on athletic prowess. Inquisitive and imaginative, he used his heart and head to invent solutions to difficult problems. His life and contributions to others are an example to be emulated, and will be long remembered by all he touched.
