John Bergland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 14 to Sep. 17, 2023.
Eugene - John Howard Bergland passed away peacefully on August 19, 2023, at the Pete Moore Hospice House. He had been living gracefully with dementia for fifteen years. John was proudly raised in a farming community in rural Illinois, he served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, and he came to the University of Oregon in 1975 to finish a law degree.

John had diverse interests and lived a creative life. He practiced personal injury and class-action law. He sold and repaired wood stoves. He was a landscaper, a house-mover, and a reconciliation counselor. He was an avid hiker and appreciated sleeping under the stars whenever he could. John was a lover of beauty, music, friends and family. He delighted in wheels, and he happily rode bicycles, BMW motorcycles, and sold cars.

Music was vital to John and his family. During his last months, he enjoyed singing along to Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, the Grateful Dead, and the Rolling Stones. He was an Elder at the Oregon Country Fair. Among other OCF activities, he sold kaleidoscopes and orange juice, and he helped to start the OCF Neighborhood Response Team.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Knox, her son, Cory, and her grandsons Jonas and Javas. Also, he is survived by his ex-wife and friend, Alice Strong, their children, Meg, Eric, Brook, and Lennon, his siblings Martha, Brita, and Bond, and his grandson, Lennox.

Donations can be made in his name to the Pete Moore Hospice House.

What will I most about John? I miss him in so many ways. I am forever grateful he was "The Dad" to our children.i miss his love of life and readiness for adventure. He didn´t worry about the small stuff. Heck he didn´t worry! When I see a side road to take or a slice of pie I know he´ll be by my side enjoying it with me.

My second nd date with George Smsllman was to a party at John and -Alice´s where I met baby Brook and heard of upcoming Lennon I thought the world of John and, years later, remember telling my daughter that if she ever needed to get some advice, she should talk to John I trusted him, his mind and heart, whatever the situation My world is a poorer place without him

John´s daughter, Meg , was is my very best friend growing up (and still is)
I remember John being so loving, always playing good music specifically, I remember driving with them (Alice and John) often in a green Volkswagen van... he was so kind to me and their home was such a respite to me because I didn´t have the kind of home that this family did-frankly I think that kind of love- for each other for children, and for everyone who crossed his path) is hard to find and I feel like he helped create that atmosphere of acceptance and welcome.
I´m so grateful to have known him.

John was a great guy. His warmth and joyful spirit set him apart. I´m sure the grace he displayed in living with the loss of his memory is a comfort as all his family and loved ones adjust to his departure.

I met John when he came to visit us in Miami. I had been a life long friend with his wife Candy. He was a lovely man
