John Blackburn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 23 to Jan. 28, 2023.
JOHN M BLACKBURN (Blackie), a proud Veteran of the US Air Force, passed away peacefully in his home, attended by family, on January 20, 2023. He was 92 years old.

The son of Morris Haley Blackburn and Gladys Malcolm, John grew up in West Virginia. He was born June 30, 1930, Marion County, W Virginia.

At the age of 16 he enlisted in the Air Force, however, a year later it was discovered that he was not 18 and he was Honorably dismissed, credited for one year of service and recommended to re-enlist at the age of 18, which he did. John valued this service highly and attained the rank of Master Sargeant. He served in 3 wars during his service from 1946-1973. He received numerous Commendations and Medals during his service. After his retirement he worked as a Police Officer with the Oakridge Police Department and later became a Private Investigator.

John is survived by a long line of family members and many lifelong friends. John had a zest for life and will be remembered by many for his generosity and care for his fellow man, as well as for his mischief-making.

John requested there be no services. He will be interred with his beloved wife of 65 years, ROSE E BLACKBURN, at the Houston National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, he would appreciate donations be made to the Shriners, St. Jude's, or your favorite charity.

Please accept our most sincerest condolences. Mr. Blackburn was a great friend to my late grandparents, Bill and Joyce McClain of Idamay (Marion Co.) , as well as my mother Carolyn Joyce McClain Daugherty. He and my mother continued to keep up with each other via phone until my mother's ALS diagnosis over a year ago. She passed on January 6th. He was so fascinating to talk to, and would send pies, fig jelly, and my mother would often do the same. We are so very sorry for your loss.

Sincerely,

Joyce Daugherty Rittenhouse
