John Kent Bowthorpe

July 13, 1938 - July 9, 2024

John Kent Bowthorpe, affectionately known as Kent, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2024, in Troy, Illinois, just four days shy of his 86th birthday. Born on July 13, 1938, in Holladay, Utah, Kent lived a life rich with adventure, service, and an unwavering devotion to family.

Kent's life was a vibrant tapestry of cherished traditions and joyful memories that touched the lives of all who knew him. From backyard acrobatics and campfires to organizing neighborhood haunted houses and leading teenagers in mischievous yet kind-hearted adventures-such as TPing houses or performing anonymous acts of service-he created a home filled with love and laughter.

After graduating high school, Kent answered the call to serve his country by joining the Navy. He served as a parachute rigger and sonar technician before continuing his dedication in the Navy Reserves as a Seabee. In this role, he operated heavy equipment on various missions-a responsibility he embraced with pride and commitment.

Kent's professional career was as diverse as it was meaningful. Over the years, he worked as a truck driver, mechanic, business owner, and warehouse manager for the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Known for his fairness and compassion in the workplace, Kent earned the respect of colleagues and employees alike. A testament to his character was his decision to learn sign language to better communicate with a team member-an act that exemplified his thoughtfulness and inclusivity.

A lover of nature and adventure, Kent found solace in fly fishing and exploring the mountains. He frequently returned to Moab to visit family and immerse himself in the breathtaking beauty of the outdoors. His generosity extended far beyond his immediate circle; he was a lifelong blood donor and even became a living kidney donor for a dear friend-a selfless act that underscored his profound kindness and commitment to helping others.

Kent also enjoyed cheering for Cardinals baseball games and watching television programs such as fishing shows, Survivor, Food Network specials, and National Geographic documentaries. These simple pleasures reflected his curiosity about the world around him and his appreciation for life's many facets.

Above all else, Kent cherished his family deeply. His parents, siblings, wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were central to his life's joy. He often said his best friends were his siblings and step brother and sister-in -law. Whether sharing stories or connecting through video chats across distances, he nurtured bonds that will endure through generations.

Kent's warmth, humor, and generous spirit left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy is one of love, service, and compassion-a guiding light for those he leaves behind. May we honor his memory by embracing these values in our own lives.
