John Haller Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 9, 2023.
John R. Haller Jr., 68, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2023, in his Gaithersburg, MD home with his wife, Rebecca, by his side.

John was born in Weston, WV on July 1, 1955, to the late John and Mildred Haller where he grew up with his two surviving brothers, Thom and Chuck.

John graduated from Lewis County High School in 1973 where he was a member of his high school band and excelled academically. He earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1977 from West Virginia University, followed by a master's degree in 1979. After graduation he started his career with Comsat in Kingwood, WV. His career took him to the Washington DC area, working as an engineer, manager, and subject matter expert for several companies.

On August 24, 1996, John married Rebecca (nee Smith Sillery) at Clarendon United Methodist Church in Arlington, VA. He gained two stepsons through the marriage - Charles "Chad" Sillery and Richard "Pudge" Sillery - and his son William "Bubba" Haller was born on November 9th, 1997. John had many accomplishments in his life, but his sons were truly his pride and joy.

John was an Eagle Scout and became an adult leader for the Boy Scouts of America for more than 30 years and was an active member in his church community. He enjoyed supporting his sons in their hockey endeavors and playing golf together (he even got a hole in one in 2016!). In 2017, John became "Pap Pap" for the first time to his granddaughter Sloan Sillery, followed by Charlotte "Charley", Jack, and Riley. His grandchildren will miss many things about their Pap Pap, most notably his impressive chalk drawings and sharing his chocolate raisins.

John was a beloved son, husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandpa. His family describe him as warm, selfless, intelligent, and kind with a witty sense of humor. He fought a brave battle against cancer right until the end and his memory will live on in our hearts forever.

He is survived by his wife Rebecca Haller of Gaithersburg, MD, his son Chad Sillery, daughter in law Cortney, and granddaughters Sloan and Charley of Catonsville, MD, his son Richard Sillery, daughter in law Dominika, grandson Jack and granddaughter Riley of Bethesda, MD, his son William Haller of Washington, DC and his brothers Chuck Haller of Tennessee and Thom Haller of Washington, DC along with their families.

A Celebration of Life service for John will be held in Spring 2024 with details forthcoming. Donations to The Prostate Cancer Research Institute in his name would be greatly appreciated in lieu of flowers.

John was a kind and generous co-worker. Even while being very sick, John gave of himself and poured out his knowledge. I've said this before, but John had a wonderful passion for pontificating (his own words), and you could hear his passion for what he did in every word. I will miss our weekly chats and his witty personality, but I pray that his soul will find its sweet rest, and may he celebrate a job well done!

I worked with John at DSFederal, and his enthusiasm and dedication to perfection and detail was obvious in his work. Really sorry to hear about his passing. He had a great sense of humor and will be sorely missed. May your family find peace in the memories of him.

Dear Rebecca, Will, Chad and Richard,
Our condolences to all of you. He will be missed as our neighbor and friend. He loved having his grandkids around and playing with them. I will miss seeing him walk Annie around in the cul-de-sac. John was always so pleasant and kind. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.
