John Hayslip Obituary

Published by Houston Chronicle on Dec. 16, 2015.
John Victor Hayslip
1939-2015
John Victor Hayslip passed away 12 December 2015 from complications due to chronic lymphatic leukemia.
John was born in Houston 22 October 1939 to Victor Hall and Ama Thompson Hayslip. He graduated from Alpine High School in 1957. He attended Rice University where he played in the band for three semesters before joining the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served for twelve years. During this time, he completed his BS at the University of New Mexico Albuquerque.
While home between semesters, he met Claudia Williams of Midland, Texas, who was attending college in Alpine. They married in September 1963. After graduating from UNM, John received his commission and was stationed in six states, plus Japan and Vietnam. He was a member of the Marine Corps pistol team at the national pistol championships in 1970.
John and Claudia's son Matt was born in Hawaii. Daughter Vickie was born two and a half years later, while John was attending law school at Texas Tech University.
The family moved to Texas City, where they lived for the next twenty-seven years. In 1984 John switched careers and became an educator, teaching high school math at Santa Fe High School and later in the local prisons.
He lived in Alvin for the past fourteen years.
His many hobbies included singing--both choir and barbershop--and target shooting. He was your classic handy man, once turning a VW into a dune buggy. A truly generous man, John gave his time and his talents to others
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Claudia; son Matthew Hall Hayslip, daughter-in-law Melissa, and grandsons Zackery Hollis Hayslip and Zane Hall Hayslip of Missouri City; and daughter Vickie Hayslip Loftis, son-in-law Jay, and grandson Ian Parker Loftis of Houston.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Alvin, at 3:30 Thursday, December 17, followed by a visitation with the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the church music program or the Wounded Warrior program.

Mr Hayslip was my teacher in the 90s. I loved his class. He was a great man and great teacher.
my thoughts are with his family

I hated his class (Algebra I and Geometry)... Class of 1996... but I was/am terrible at math... But Mr. Hayslip, I adored him ... He really tried so hard to help me and give me opportunities to re-take tests and help me work through homework. I spent many days after school where he spent extra myself and others that needed it.

After my last class, he called me at home during Christmas break to let me know I had passed... Just barely with a 73, but he wanted to let me know as soon as he knew and helped to stiffle my fears.

He was a good man, while he struggled to help me learn math, he taught me to never give up, work hard, and try again ... He really cared about his students. He also greatly displayed the value of patience.

To his family... I am so very sorry for your loss. My heart breaks for you and I have you all in my prayers... May God wrap you in loving arms and keep you until you are all together again.
