John Manges Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 26, 2015.
"There's no point in being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes"
-Tom Baker, Dr. Who

Throughout his life, John sought to maintain his youthful spirit while inspiring mature values in his children and friends. He was very passionate about his hobbies and knew the joy of collecting, refurbishing and sharing his model train sets and other childhood playthings. The train sets are on permanent display on the top floor of the "band barn," and last year he restored the shiny red car he pedaled around in as a toddler for his beautiful 17–month-old granddaughter, Sofia. He also delighted in adding to the library and stamp collections he began as a youth.

John "Doc" Manges was born on September 17, 1953 in South Bend, Indiana. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack on May 23, 2015 while leading his 'Vette Club on a cruise through a scenic area east of Atlanta. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jackie Manges; his two daughters, Michelle and Sandy and their spouses, Stefan Earnhardt and Kevin Wolfe, as well as one granddaughter, Sofia Earnhardt, all of the Atlanta area; a brother, Victor Manges, of St. Louis; and his parents, Earl and Virginia, of Bremen, Indiana. A gentle, loving, family-oriented man, he cared deeply about others, and worked hard to ensure that all were fully enjoying themselves, no matter what the venue. Since he was an accomplished drummer whose equipment was most difficult to transport, he took much pleasure in hosting weekly band practices as well as Pool Nights and numerous memorable holiday celebrations. He planned 'Vette Cruises for the club, preparing informational packets for all the participants with historical and little-known facts about their stops along the way. He was passionate about many things – his lovingly restored '79 Corvette, his drums, his work, his extensive collections and his beloved cats. He and his loving wife Jackie completed many projects together to enhance their outdoor living area and shared many nature moments, ranging from rainstorms and waterfalls to the varied wildlife in their back yard, especially the river otters.

John loved electronics of all kinds, even as a young boy, and parlayed that interest into a profession. He wrote computer programs at Primerica, in Duluth, GA, where he was a loyal employee for the past 28 years. He took pride in his position of Senior Lead Application Developer, and enjoyed working on projects of all kinds with his fellow team members.

John has enriched our lives in many ways and has left us with a million memories and a lasting legacy of tangible treasures. He is now at rest and we hold him close within us. Please hold him near, as we do, in your mind and your spirit.

I have know Doc and his wife Jackie since 1986. He and I collaborated in several bands. I would always get a call after a lull between bands saying "I'm getting the band back together".

It was my extreme pleasure to have had an artistic relationship with one of the hardest working drummers and band managers I have ever known.

I have shed many tears at the loss of my dear friend and will do so for a long time I think. When I'm on a gig though, I will always play my for John.

Doc was one of the best drummers I have ever played with. He could play just about any type of music and that is an accomplishment for any musician. I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of his band "All in Red" for many years. He was also a wonderful and caring friend to everyone in the band. My heart goes out to Jackie, Michelle, and Sandy for their great loss. Remember the good times and cherish all that Doc means to you. Hold dear all the gifts he gave you, for he has made your life richer.

Jackie and the entire Manges family, I am so sorry for your loss. Doc was a great person and knowing I will not ever be able to talk with him again saddens Me far more then I could ever express in words. I never was the big winner at pool but that wasn't the reason to go to Doc's Pool Hall. Doc my friend, you will be missed.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jackie and her family as they struggle to deal with the untimely death of Doc. While we are new to the Amazing Corvette Club, it was easy to see how he loved being cruise master and excelled at making it a memorable event for his fellow Vette lovers. He will be missed by all.

Dear Jackie,
On behalf of the '72 Winter Pledge Class of the Theta Xi chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity (Angola, IN) I want to express our deepest and sincerest condolences at the loss of Brother John. He always had a positive and unique way of expressing himself, and he was a friend to all. For many of us those were the "zig-zag" years and the delightful experiences we shared can never be forgotten! "Oon Yelliman" was John's mantra, and I'll always remember him as a great friend and brother.
AEKDB in Peace.

He was my friend, and a friend to my whole family. We met in high school, spent time together out west 35 years ago. I last visited him and Jackie at their place in 2011. I featured him in a recent jazz painting on drums. I will miss him.

I too am a fellow Griffith HS graduate (72) that knew John. I met John - in 1971 - at the Sherwood Club - where he was the drummer in an orchestra led by my 6th grade teacher - Mr. Thomas. He was a wonderful musician. It was a pleasure knowing him so long ago. My sympathies to his entire family.

I grew up with John in our old neighborhood in Griffith, Indiana. John was always his own man. Intelligent, creative, a gifted musician, with a great sense of humor and compassion. We graduated high school in 1971 together and although we have not seen each other in decades, that I am saddened by this news goes unsaid. To his entire family please accept my condolences.
