John McCreery Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 7, 2025.
John Robert McCreery was born on March 18, 1930, and passed away at 94 in Fishers, Indiana, on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

John was born and raised in Jenners, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Boswell High School, he served in the U.S. Army. John attended St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, on the GI Bill and graduated Magna cum laude in 1957. He met his wife of 63 years, Winona (Nonnie), while working at West Virginia University, and they married on Thanksgiving in 1961.

John had a successful career in computer sales and retired in 1992. He started the next chapter of his life with Nonnie by moving to Horseshoe Bay, Texas, and subsequently to Dunnellon, Florida. They returned to Fishers, Indiana, in 2011 and remained there until his death.

John was a devoted family man and a devout Catholic. He enjoyed golf, live music (combo bands), and yearly vacations to visit his sister Kitty and brother-in-law Paul. John had a smile that could light up a room and a sense of humor to match. John firmly believed in the power of positive thinking and lived his life that way. He was an avid sports fan, and his favorite teams were the Steelers, Pirates, and Indiana University football and basketball.

John was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary A. (McClain) McCreery, brothers Jerome and Edward McCreery, and sister Mary Catherine "Kitty" Ransel. He is survived by his loving wife, Nonnie McCreery, daughters Theresa "TK" DeBoard (Mike), and Linda McCreery, as well as nieces and nephews. His family and friends will dearly miss him.

All arrangements are private. Burial will take place at a later date at St. Vincent Cemetery in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

I was fortunate to have John and Nonnie as my next door neighbors in Britton Falls for 13 years. They often shared treats with me on holidays and birthdays when they had their family celebrations. Nonnie, Linda, and Theresa my thoughts and prayers are with you as you adjust to life without John in it. He will always be with you in spirit.

Jerry McCreery's children, Jane, David & Bill, are thinking of Aunt Nonnie, Theresa & Linda on their loss. We're glad you mentioned Uncle John's positive thinking and love of sports in the obituary, because that's how we remember him most. It's sad to think of John being the last member of that McCreery generation to be gone. Jenners, PA, sent them out to do a lot of good in the world. Personally, I'll always remember the music that rang through the house when Kitty and Paul joined our two families. Love is coming your way from Tucson and Chicago.
