John McGarry Obituary
He was born March 29, 1924, son of Ellen Dunn McGarry and William John McGarry in Rutland, Vermont, and attended Rutland High School.
He graduated from Middlebury College in 1945, and the Yale School of Medicine in 1951. He then completed his medical residency at the Yale New Haven Hospital (1951-54).
He served in the U.S. Naval Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He had a long and fulfilling medical career practicing as a general internist for 43 years in Darien, Connecticut. He served a term as President of the Medical staff at the Stanford Hospital and was a long time member of the Fairfield County Medical Association and the Connecticut State Medical Society.
He retired to his farm in Pittsford, Vermont, and spent the winters in his home in Scottsdale, Arizona.
He is survived by his three daughters and one son-in-law: Sharon Foster, M.D., (William Foster, M.D.) of Raleigh, North Carolina; The Rev. Dr. Susan McGarry of Middlebury, Vermont; and Kathleen McGarry of Lafayette, Colorado. He is survived by six grandchildren; Mark, David, and Scott Foster; Alfonzo Terrell; Lean and Thomas McGarry. His three brothers William, Richard and Frederick are deceased.
The funeral will be held at Christ the King Church in Rutland, Vermont, at 1 p.m., January 4, 2014, with the Rev. Justin Baker, presiding. A receiving hour at the church will begin at noon. A reception will follow the service in the church reception hall. Calling hours will be at 1085 Sangamon Road, Pittsford, Vermont, Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m. January 3,
Burial will be at a later date in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Wallingford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ the King Church, Rutland, VT 05701; or to Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT 05753.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

John was a very competent Doctor and friend to the MacDonnell family. He helped save my sister's life in an auto accident. He worked with me with my high school and college football injuries.He saw us through all of our colds and ailments over the years. A twinkle in his eye, a great demeanor. He was a special part of the Darien community for so many years and helped make it a special place to grow up. Our prayers are for you John. God bless.
