John was a good friend and a colleague who will remain in my memory as someone who was always willing to help. I recall having many discussion with John on topics of mutual interests (specially music and plants). John will always be missed.

I am very saddened by the passing of such a good person. My fond memories of John are how he would go out of his way to greet me and befriend those he did not know. He welcomed his co-workers in a way that few others do.

I only had the opportunity to work with and know John for a short period of time, but in that time we had many interesting discussions as he shared his perspective on our small but growing team at COM DEV.
My condolences to John's family. He will be fondly remembered by those who met him.

It was always a pleasure hearing from John...
You knew when John found something humorous because you could hear the laughter bubble in his words.
I have had the pleasure of working with John for the past 15 years and have always enjoyed our conversations.
John will be truly... truly missed, both personally and professionally.
My thoughts and heart go out to John, his family and his friends.

My Family and I would like to offer our sincere condolences to John’s Family. John and I go back many years. John bought my 200SX Nissan car, and I was always very impressed with his mechanic skills. I also played music with John, Oool, Dave Bohatyretz and the rest of the Jaws. As a drummer I found John’s bass playing to be imaginative and energetic.
I am now working for Skyservice Airways in Mississauga, and am presently enrolled in a Quality Course and will not be able to attend the funeral. However, our thoughts and prayers go out to John’s Family.

I'll always remember and appreciate John stopping by and welcoming me on my first day. Unfortunately I did not get to know him well in the short time we worked together. He will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues at COM DEV. My most sincere condolences to John's family.

My sincere sympathy to John’s family for the loss.
I first worked with John at CAL a little over twenty years ago and met him again three years ago at EMS Space Science. My memories of John is filled with non-work related stuff – John’s cars & car repairs/workarounds, the music, his intense approach to aspects of life, his humour…
John has left us too early; I will miss John.

I offer my sincere condolences to John's Family. John was a long time close friend. We had played creative improvised music together for many years. I am in the group The Jaws together with John and Dave Bohatyretz. I live pretty much full time in Asia now. My wife is from Java. But I am originally from Ottawa. Every year I would come back once or twice and we would play music together at John's house in Manotick. He was always a reliable friend and a gifted musician. I shall miss him dearly. He used to talk about someday visiting me and my family in Java. I am sorry that my small son will never get to meet John.
I am afraid that I wont be able to attend the funeral as I am not coming to Canada until 16th of May. At any rate my sympathies go out to his family. John and I were just about the same age. He was one year my elder.

I worked with John Metcalfe for about 4 years and have been immensely impressed by his professionalism, in-depth knowledge and wisdom. He was always honest, humble and upfront in his dealing (what you see is what you get kind-a guy). Although most of our interactions were work related, but occasionally we chatted about other topics of mutual interests such as, world politics, travel, music and plants. It was always a pleasure to see John and talk to him. I will always remember him as a gentle, kind, humble, knowledgeable and simply a decent human being. John you’ll be truly missed.

John was my neighbour for the last 22 years. I will miss our occasional chats about various topics. Listening to him talk so passionately about his latest projects, jamming session, dedication to repairing his cars and the smell of his frequent B-B-Q's. I always waved to John while riding my bicycle.

John once joined our hapless foursome for the annual company tournament. I remember his unbridled enthusiasm as he called me over to see an old rusted VW Beetle he had discovered in the woods.
A dedicated and conscientious worker with a great depth of talent, he will be sorely missed.

I probably didn't know John as well or for as long as many others who have shared their memories here, but he always impressed me with his dedication, passion, and artistry, both in his work and his pursuits outside of work. He was a highly respected colleague and role model, and I offer my sincere condolences to his friends and family.

I have known John the past 10+ years as a co-worker and a friend. It is with great sadness that I say farewell to John. My sympathies to friends & family alike. I'll keep my memories of our trading stories on the latest car repairs, the antics of our cats, or John's love of music.

I met John when I first started work at CAL. John took professionalism and pride in his work to an unsurpassed level. Everyone came to rely on the fact that whatever John was working on would get done right. John took his work seriously but he was always friendly, and had a great sense of humour. He will be greatly missed.

John was one of the first people I met at CAL, when I went for a job interview there. I was taken for a tour of the clean rooms where space hardware was being built, and it was John who took me in and showed them to me. I was left with a very good impression of him and, hence, the company. Over the next 11 years, I worked in the same department as John and also on many of the same projects, and I got to know him better. His dedication to meticulous workmanship, and his straightforward approach, were qualities of his I always admired.
I was also very impressed by his musical ability, and fondly remember playing guitar with him outside the CAL buildings on Morrison drive. We would sit on the grass at Friday lunchtime, with other guitar-playing engineers, and jam away. Later, seeing him play jazz with Jaws of the Flying Carpet, I could see how he excelled as a musician just as much as an engineer.
John was a great person to know, and I am sorry that his kind soul has left us so early.

I'm very sorry to hear about John. he was a good guy. thank you for letting me know. John and I played in a band together. he was always an enthusiastic musician and music-lover. He was an excellent host, and my visits out to the wilds of Manotick Station were always rewarded with good times, lots of laughs, and often a nice chat outside. My visits to John's place actually prompted me to move out of the city, to the peace and quiet of the country.
I'm afraid I can't write any more right now. too many memories...John coming out to my place to help me chainsaw an old tree, and grinning from ear to ear as he discovered (and grabbed) a large garter snake...John playing his impossible blues at the Whipping Post...his contagious warm smile when he heard some good music...I can't believe he's gone.

John was a quiet but solid and very special person. His dedication was immeasurable, not only in his work but also in his contribution to the work of others and making the work environment more of a home. He offered so much, not only in engineering but also musical knowledge and fellowship. I will miss our chats at the office back window discussing the wildlife to be seen. He was truly a gentle soul.

John was one of those rare people who are absolutely great to know and a pleasure to work with. A gentlemen, even in the toughest times. He was one of those quiet pillars in our circle of friends, who you knew you could count on. His passing away really hits home.
Our world is diminished without you, John. Rest in peace.
