Bonnie, Mary and family,
I am very sorry for your loss. John was a great person and a real inspiration to me and so many others. I was very moved by his commitment to social justice and I have fond memories from when I was a kid in Bala Cynwyd as well as the trip I made to Glen Lake to visit you after I moved to CA.

Dr. Raines changed my life. As an undergraduate student at Temple U. in 1967 I took a World Religion course with this giant of a man. I was 19 years old, knew not much about anything, but was eager to learn. To this day, I have never forgotten how Dr. Raines opened my eyes and my mind to a world of complexity and compassion. His sharp mind and almost messianic presentations in class enthralled and enlightened me. Dr. Raines' classroom in Curtis Hall became my personal church/synagogue. I will never forget him as long as I live.
