John H. Sims

DANVILLE, CALIF. — Captain John H. Sims, U. S. Navy (Retired), passed away November 29, 2015, Danville, Calif. at Manor Care (Hospice) of natural causes.

Born in Wauseon May 22, 1918. At an early age John moved with his family to Piqua where his father C.M. Sims was high school principal and later superintendent of schools and later president of the Chamber of Commerce. It was in Piqua that John met and married his wife Judy (Greenbank) who pre-deceased him in 2003.

John was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., class of 1940. While on active duty he attended Harvard Business School and received an MBA degree in 1950.

He retired from the Navy in 1965 after 30 years of active duty having served in various capacities at numerous Naval Air Stations throughout the United States.

After retiring from the Navy he returned to school in 1965 at the University of California at Berkeley and earned a PhD in Business Administration in 1971. Concurrent with his graduate work he was a professor of management in the Department of Business and Economics at California State University at Hayward. A position he held until his retirement in 1983.

John was active in the Presbyterian Church serving as an Elder and was active with the Boy Scouts.

He was also very active with Rotary International. While living in Hayward he was a member of the Hayward Rotary Club and served as president. After moving to Danville he became a member of the San Ramon Rotary Club.

Survivors include children: Jack (spouse Patricia) of Augusta, Maine; Jeff (spouse Janet) of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; Susan (spouse Will) of Folsom, Calif.; and Melissa (spouse Monte) of San Jose, Calif.

Grandchildren: Jennifer Sims of Augusta, Maine; Elizabeth Sims O'Hearn (spouse Andy) of Winthrop, Maine; Greg Sims of Khartoum, Sudan; and Cathy Sims of Tucson, Ariz.

Great grandson: John Jackson O'Hearn of Winthrop, Maine.

Local arrangements are by the Trident Society.

At his request, no services were/will be held. He will be inurned in the columbarium of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD with Judy, the love of his life. Also, at his request he says to say a prayer for him or drink a toast to him or both. He wanted all to know "it's been a great life."
