John Spruill Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2010.

GREENSBORO — Superintendent John Edgar Spruill Sr., was born November 26, 1916, in Gulf, to the late Deacon Edgar Spruill and Elder Myrtle Lambert Spruill. He went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 after a long illness.

He married Ernestine Frazier in December of 1940 and they had 10 children. The Holy Spirit guided him in learning to read for he had to sacrifice his education to help support his family. He was called the "Walking Bible" because he memorized the entire Holy Bible.

The Spruills' Glover Street home has been a staple in the Ole Asheboro Community. They joined the Small Street Church of God in Christ Church, became very involved, then he was drafted into the U.S. Army.

Following the military, he continued as a servant leader in his church. He thanked God for Bishop Wyoming Wells' counseling, mentoring, and molding. Superintendent Spruill's tenacity in serving led to Bishop Wells appointing him as Pastor of Taylortown Church of God in Christ which was renamed Spruill Temple in his honor. His faithfulness also led to his appointment as Pastor of Pemberton Temple Church of God In Christ in Hamlet. In addition, he worked at P.T. Huffman Trucking for over 40 years.

He was preceded in death by siblings, Jim Spruill (Bonnie); Wesley Lynn Spruill (Dulia); and Herbert Junior Spruill (Dorothy) all of Greensboro.

He leaves his loving wife of almost 70 years, Ernestine; and siblings, Doria Elizabeth McKoy (Edward - deceased) of Goldston, Virginia Elnora Belk (Cecil - deceased) of Sanford, and Pearline McMillan (CJ - deceased) of Sanford. He also leaves behind his children, Thelma Robinson Burwell, John E. Spruill, II, Edith Davis, Joyce Spruill, Paul Anthony Spruill, Michelle Moon (Ulysses), Thelvis Spruill, adopted son, Will Moorehead all of Greensboro, Reginald Spruill (Hazel)of Burlington; and a special niece, Diane Brown (Joe) of Greensboro. Two of his children are deceased, Grace Spruill and Ernest Spruill. He also leaves a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, adopted children and grandchildren. In addition, are numerous saints and friends across North Carolina and the nation that he touched through his preaching and teaching.

The body is with Perry J. Brown Funeral home in Greensboro. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home.

The Homegoing services for Superintendent John Edgar Spruill will be on Sunday, November 28, 2010 for the District Homegoing Celebration to be held at Southern Pines Primary School, 1250 West New York Avenue, Souther Pines. Viewing and family time is from 3:45 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Funeral is at 4:30 p.m.

The officiates for Laurinberg District Homegoing Service on Sunday Elder Jerry Chesney of Spruill Temple COGIC and Elder Charles White of Pemberton Temple COGIC.

The State homegoing Service will be held on Monday, November 29, 2010 will be of officiated by Bishop J. Woolard Of the Greater North Carolina Jurisdiction. The viewing will be at 10 a.m. The family time is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. The funeral is planned for 11 a.m. All services will be held at Evangel Church of God in Christ, 2201 E. TO THE SPRUILL FAMILY,
First of all, to have lived to be 96 yrs. old is a true blessing but that doesn't stop the tears from falling down our face or wishing that the sleep of death wouldn't knock on our door but we also thank God when our love one was rooted and grounded in the Lord. That gives us so much comfort and joy knowing that they will be with Jesus. May God, coomfort you in your time of sorrow. We will continue to pray for you all.
