Johnie Kirk Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 18, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Johnie (John) J. Kirk. age 79, of Mebane, North Carolina, who passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025 surrounded by his loving family.

A beloved father, friend, and member of the community, John will be remembered for his warmth, strength, and unwavering support for those he loved.

Born in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, and a graduate of Harrisonville High School, and later in life earning his Bachelor of Science degree from Limestone College in Gaffney, SC John lived a life grounded in service, commitment, and love. He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and later built a meaningful career that spanned decades. He worked for Bell & Howell for 25 years before continuing his leadership and service as the Operations Manager of AppalCART at Appalachian State University for 15 years before retiring, where he left a lasting impact on colleagues and the community.

Beyond his professional life, John lived a life defined by service, community, quiet strength, wisdom and leadership. He was a longtime member of the Jaycees in Jefferson City, Missouri where he served as President and was on the board of directors for several years. John received the Jaycees prestigious "Man of the Year" award, for demonstrating exceptional leadership and service within his community. In his later years he was also an active member of the Rotary Club in Pensacola, Florida. During his time living in Boone, North Carolina, he served on the board of directors for the Deep Gap Volunteer Fire Department. His faith was also a guiding force in his life, and he was a member of First United Methodist Church of Graham, North Carolina.

He was a passionate sports fan, proudly cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers, and Kansas City Royals. John and his wife were also enthusiastic square dancers, active in numerous clubs across Missouri, North Carolina, and Florida throughout their lives.

John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rheta Kirk; his daughter Christine Smith and son-in-law Eric Smith; his grandson, Quinton Smith; his sister, Viola Wieberg and many nieces and nephews.

John lived a life of service and had a strong sense of duty, so chose to leave a lasting legacy by donating his body to Duke University in order to support Alzheimer's medical education and research. Therefore, there will be no formal funeral service at this time.

John was a man of deep integrity, remembered for his gentle spirit, strong work ethic, and unwavering dedication and love that he poured into his family. He touched the lives of many with his generous spirit and steady presence. His legacy of love and loyalty will live on in those who were fortunate enough to know him.

In honor of his life, the family asks that donations be made in John's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, a cause close to the family's heart.
