Jonathan H Sokoloff passed away on Wednesday, May 6, from injuries sustained in an accident while in Beijing, China. He was 32 years old.
Born and reared in Gainesville, Jonathan graduated from Gainesville High School. While employed by the University of Florida library system, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Leo University and embarked upon his career as a teacher. He taught for five years in the Duval County School System and was 'Teacher of the Year' at Mandarin Middle School where he taught English, Drama and coached Volleyball, Diving and Swimming.
An avid traveler, Jonathan accepted a position as a middle school teacher at The Beijing International Bilingual Academy in Bejing, China where he taught English for almost two years and had accepted a teaching position in Brazil for the fall of 2015.
Jonathan loved teaching, traveling, hiking, running, live music, the Gators, spending time with family and friends and was loved by all who knew him.
He is survived by his mother Linda Trantham (Glenn) of Gainesville; father, Harold Sokoloff of Miami; two sisters, Tracy Goolsby (Buddy) of Gainesville, and Jennifer Sokoloff, also of Gainesville; one nephew, Timothy Goolsby of Gainesville; a grandmother, Micki Dahne of Miami; aunts, uncles, cousins, many former students and friends here in the U.S. and abroad. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother Mary Ann Stevens of Gainesville.
