I knew Joe as J D when we both worked at Kelly AFB. It was Joe that told me about NASA in 1964 when I picked him up along with his family on his return from Houston to San Antonio. His car had broken down on highway 90 outside of Seguin and I gave him a lift and helped him get back on his way. It was then that he encouraged me to apply at NASA in Houston. We worked at the Johnson Space Center until my retirement in 1986. I owe J D for much happiness and got to know him even better over the years. To know him was to respect and admire him.

I am very sorry to learn of Joe's passing. He was a real professional, and caring man.

I was Deputy Director of Human Resources at the Center, when Joe was selected and hired. I had the pleasure of working closely with him until I transferred to Washington, DC.

My condolences extend to his immediate and extended hamily.

The world is a better place for having Dr. Atkinson's presence. I am a better person for having known him. My father, the late Pete Vazquez, thought highly of Joe, too. Much love and sympathies to his family and loved ones. Know that he affected many lives in the positive.

It was with great sadness that I heard of the death of J.D. I worked for Dr. Atkinson from 1976 to 1989 when I transferred to NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. He always encouraged me to continue my education. I was able to complete my Bachelor and Master's degree while working for him. My deepest sympathies go out to his family. I know he will be missed. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
