Joseph Cashman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 5, 2018.
Joseph Charles Cashman, the eighth and last child of James E. Cashman and Elizabeth Nolan, was born in Owatonna, MN. He was born on Mother's Day, May 12, 1934. At the age of 84, he was born to his new life on Independence Day, July 4, 2018.

Joseph graduated Owatonna High School in 1952 and then chose to continue his education at St. Mary's College in Winona, MN where he majored in seminary and philosophy.

In 1955, he was recognized at St. Mary's College by "Who's Who in America's Colleges and Universities." While there, he served as head athletic manager for three years; prefect of the St. Francis Third Order, vice-president of the Rural Life Club, the Philosophy Club, and the Classical Club.

Bishop Edward Fitzgerald ordained Joseph as Father Joseph in December 1960. Father Joseph served as a priest until his retirement in 1992.

After retiring from the priesthood, Joseph then moved to Dallas, Texas. He helped his brother, J. Patrick Cashman, who as owner Skeffington's Formal Wear, with his battle with cancer. Later, he and his brother went into business selling residential real estate. In 2006, he retired from real estate.

In May of 2007, Joseph met his future husband, Jose Luis Meza. In August of 2008, they both went to exchange vows at the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City. There they promised to love and take care of each other until the end of the time.

Joseph loved to celebrate life by both hosting and going to parties. Back in his home town of Owatonna, he was also known for having lots of parties!

He was a member of several Dallas organizations including the OLITA Dinner Group, Prime Timers, 40 Plus or Minus, Airliners, Lakewood Social Club, and Black Tie.

Joseph also loved the arts by supporting them as a season ticket holder to many concerts, musicals, and plays in Dallas.

One of Joseph's favorite sayings was "Every day above ground is a good day!"

He was a proud Catholic and, most of all, a fun-loving Irishman. He is survived by his husband of ten years, Jose L. Meza; his sisters, Marge Gallagher of FL and Liz Troy of MD.

While we lost this fight with Alzheimer's, we can keep fighting. Do not give up!
