Joseph Cianni Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 26, 2024.
Joseph Anthony Romeo Cianni, known affectionately as Joe or Giuseppe, passed away on July 21, 2024, at the age of 79, in Brewster, New York. Born on October 10, 1944, in the Bronx, New York, Joe brought joy and laughter into the lives of all those around him.

Joe attended St. Martin of Tours (calling it St. Marvin of Tortures because it made him laugh) for his primary education, followed by Cardinal Hayes High School. He later graduated from Fordham University, magna cum laude, with a degree in English.

He began working at 18 years old, to support his mother, in the mailroom at CBS Television, alongside none other than: Barry Manilow. He retired at 62, ending his long career as a night and weekend manager of Broadcast Control for CBS Television.

Joe was renowned for his wit and intelligence, often described as very funny, silly, warm, and incredibly smart. He was an expert at giving directions to The Decoy Museum in Havre de Grace, MD, made the world's best lasagna, and thoroughly enjoyed being an extra in his daughter's childhood homemade movies. He loved fishing, be it in the ponds of Boca Raton, FL or on the beaches of North Carolina - never without his trusty Sperry Topsiders. His hobbies included being a lifelong Yankees fan, reading endless books on history, listening to the Beatles, and pursuing his passion for flying gliders and sailplanes.

He is survived by his son, Thomas Cianni; daughter, Caroline Cianni; daughter-in-law, Kristen Kelley Cianni; son-in-law, Michael Newbold; grandchildren, Cameron Cianni, Samantha Cianni, Hannah Newbold, and Tommy Newbold; nieces Diane Ernst, Linda Muscarella, Amy Fabano, Laura Rivera, Celeste Kane; and nephew, Paul DiPasqua. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Luigi Cianni and Maria Liguori; sister, Anne DiPasqua; and brother-in-law, Al DiPasqua. His former wife, Anne Ashburn Cianni, also survives him.

A private memorial lunch will be held to celebrate Joe's life. Those interested in attending are encouraged to contact the family directly for details. Anne Ashburn Cianni can be reached through Facebook Messenger.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York State: https://naminys.networkforgood.com/projects/192907-nami-new-york-state. This gesture will honor his legacy by supporting a cause his family deeply cares about.

My uncle Joe was so much more to me than an uncle. We were 11 years apart and he was at times more like a big brother and a friend. I always knew I could count on him for anything. He was generous and funny and his laugh was contagious.

He taught me to drive a stick on his Fiat, before I even had a learners permit, and then on his much loved BMW.

The Joe I remember loved Italian food, fast cars, movies, making people laugh and Jones Beach.
He loved his children Tom and Caroline and enjoyed talking about them when we would visit with him.

I will never forget him.

My Uncle Joe was very dear to me. He taught me how to play baseball and in particular 3rd base, his favorite position. He took me to my first professional hockey game at Madison Square Garden. He also took me camping and many times to Jones Beach. Uncle Joe loved his sports cars and when I was 13 he taught me how to drive a "stick shift 4-speed". Sleep well my dear Uncle, I will miss you!
