Joseph DILIBERTO Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 17, 2017.
DILIBERTO, M.D., Joseph Francis Jr.

58 years old, a beloved cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, passed away peacefully December 10, 2017 at his home in Belleair, Florida, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts May 5, 1959 to a loving father, Joseph F. Diliberto Sr., M.D. and loving mother, Jean M. Diliberto. Dr. Diliberto's childhood years were spent in Worcester, Massachusetts and vacationing on Cape Cod with his family. Dr Diliberto graduated with honors from Worcester Academy and Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Inspired at a young age to become a cardiac surgeon, Dr. Diliberto earned his Medical Degree from Marquette University (The Medical College of Wisconsin) in 1986. He was awarded the Lemmon Company Award for Outstanding Achievement in the study of General Surgery. He completed his post doctorate training at the University of Connecticut from 1986-1991 where he was distinguished as the Resident Teacher of the Year for four years. He received the Weck Surgical Resident Award and was honored as the General Surgery Resident of the Year in 1990 and 1991. Dr. Diliberto completed his Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Medical Center, in 1993 where he was awarded the prestigious Albert Starr Surgeons Scholar in 1992.

Dr Diliberto was chosen by Tampa Bay Magazine as one of the best Cardiothoracic Surgeons in the Tampa Bay area. He was certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of General Surgery. He was an associate of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and a fellow with the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Diliberto distinguished himself in the field of cardiac, thoracic and carotid surgeries. Specializing in complicated, high risk surgical procedures and minimally invasive heart and lung surgeries, Dr Diliberto had been at the forefront of heart, lung and carotid surgery. His cardiac outcomes have been nationally recognized in the top 1% by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Dr. Diliberto had been practicing Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery in Pinellas County since 1994. He was the cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon in the multidisciplinary group, the Diagnostic Clinic, until 2003.

Joseph Diliberto, "Dr. Joe," had a vision to develop a cardiothoracic surgical practice dedicated to providing outstanding, consistent care for patients undergoing cardiac, thoracic and vascular procedures. He started his own practice, Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates, PA in 2003. He will forever be remembered and respected for his expertise, love for his patients and respect for his colleagues. His immense caring for his patients even brought him to do house calls when he thought it was necessary. He was not only a technically superior cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, he was an incredible doctor who took care of his patients as if they were his own family. This was his passion, his purpose. He was an inspiration to the healthcare community.

Dr. Diliberto is survived by his loving wife, Priscilla Aymong Diliberto; son, Matthew Joseph Diliberto and Matt's mother, Donna Diliberto; daughter, Taytem Rindosh Diliberto; stepdaughters, Rhianna Rouillard and husband Jared, Justine Rindosh; and grandson, Abram Lee Rouillard.

Joe's loving family includes brothers, John Andrew Diliberto and wife Janine, Jay Peter Diliberto, MD and wife Susan; loving sister, Jayne Diliberto-Porter and significant other Nick Grande; nieces and nephews, Nicholas, Julianna, Amanda, Jennifer, Aleah, Dylan and Jordan. He has many other family members and friends who always held places in his heart. Dr. Joe's second passion was golf. He also loved boating, cooking, (you have not lived if you have not had Dr. Joe's meatballs), teaching, and spending time with his family and friends. Most importantly, Dr. Joe was a very spiritual person who spent many hours not only reading and understanding the Word, but living it every day.

Dr Joe and family would like to thank his many friends, talented physicians, and health care professionals who have all been by his side through his journey with cancer.

Family will receive friends at Hubbell Funeral Home, 499 N. Indian Rocks Rd., Belleair Bluffs, FL 33770. Friday, January 5, 2018 from 6-8 pm. Mass will be held at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church, 820 Jasmine Way, Clearwater 33756, Jan. 6, 2018 at 12 noon. His final resting place will be with his loving parents at St. Johns Cemetery, Worcester, MA. Hubbell Funeral Home (727) 584-7671 www.HubbellFuneralHome.com

Shocked to find out that Joe had passed away some time ago. I met him in 1984, when he was a medical student in Milwaukee and I was an intern in surgery. We lived in the same apartment complex. I remember his amazing story about the Grenada invasion that happened while he was a medical student there.

It's that time of year again when sadness creeps into mybody n mind. When we lost Joe as he so liked to be called, Laying in the Hospital bed and just talking to I think 5 other surgeons who said I would never play hockey again and in Walks in this young good looking Dr. who puts out his hand to shake and he says Hi I'm Joe and I said glad to meet you Dr. and he said no you call me Joe and then said Your the Hockey player right?
I said yes and immediatly felt calm come over my body. He said Let me check you out and proceeds to check all of my body which wasn't in to bad of shape because of Hockey. He looks at me and says This will be a piece of cake for you and I'll have you back on the ice in 3 mths. I said but those other Dr. said I had to quite hockey and he looked at me and said Ok now you have to make a choice do you want one of them or do you want me? I looked him straight in the eye and I said I WANT YOU JOE!! He said it will be easy for you and the only thing that will hurt is when I pull the plug out in the next day. When He did pull the plug out he said Well how bad was it? I said Joe that was nothing compared to getting a 100 mile an hour slap shot in the ankle Joe !! He smilled and laugh hardy! We became good friends and golfed and had dinners together and Connie n I just loved Joe n Priscilla and the family and had some great times with them! Some great memories with a wonderful humble faithful joyful one of a kind person where ever he went.We miss him so much and the family and his son was playing hockey with us until he went away to College to also become a Heart Surgion! Is this Dr Joe who did his residency at St Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford CT? I was a nurse there from 1986-1991. I was just talking to someone about him the other day. I did a Google search and found his obituary! My thoughts are with the family

I was just going through some things of my mother (Janet Battey, a patient of Dr Joe) I came across his business card and decided to google him to see if he was still practicing! Imagine my sorrow when I found his obituary! I attended many appointments that my mother had with him, and was there when he put a new valve into her (old lady) body! I´ll never forget him visiting her in the ICU after the procedure! She was so depressed and not eating! He ran down the hall to the nurses station and got on the speaker to her bed and in the deepest voice he said, "Mrs. Battey? This is God! Eat your Dinner!!!!" Then he ran back to her room and asked,"Did I hear God in here????" It put a smile on her face and she ate her dinner! She adopted him as her son and loved him dearly! Just wanted to share that memory! We all felt he was pretty special!

I was giving a talk at the International Coronary Congress meeting in NYC last weekend and was randomly talking to two surgeons while getting coffee, one was a doctor from Miami, Dr. Tomas Salerno who helped train Joe in cardiac surgery and another was one of his residents from his past. Neither had heard of Joe´s passing, but both had excellent memories of Dr. Joe and what an amazing surgeon he was. Not a year goes by that you don´t remain in my thoughts and conversations. Hard to believe it has been 4 years.

You are forever missed,

Love,

I met Dr. Joe when I was 25 and he was 27 on a vacation in the West Indies. He was young and was just becoming a surgeon and so passionate about being one. He was a very nice person. I was thinking of him after 35 years and was so sad to hear of his passing. My sincere condolences.

Joe will always be in my memories as the best Doctor I have ever worked with. After being a
Navy Retiree and RN (MSN) for 31 years, I have worked with many Doctors in my career. Some stories I could tell if his time as a Fellow at the VA Medical Center in Miami, Florida would make his family laugh.
A wonderful man, a wonderful Doctor. I feel blessed to have spent a relatively short time working with him. He was truly awesome. I am writing this note at age 75, to let his family know that without a doubt many, many people respected and loved this man.

I accidently found Dr Joe's Obituary I was shocked to read that he has passed, and my heartfelt sympathy to the Family. My daughters and I met with him when it came to whether or not my husband should have heart surgery. He was so kind to go into detail what my options would be if my husband had the surgery or not. The decision, of course, was up to me, but I had so much confidence in what Dr Joe said, I decided against the surgery. Dr Joe came back in and told me: "If it was my Father, I would have made the same decision under the circumstances".
My husband did recover and did get better until he passed in August 2012. I still have Dr Joe's business card he gave me in case I needed him or had any questions. Again, I'm just so sorry to hear he has passed. The medical profession has lost a wonderful person.

Condolescenxes to his family.
I was under open heart replacement mitral surgery by him in Memorial Jackson Miami Hospital on 1992. He did a great job. I am still using his mitral valve.
Today unfortunately I have issues with another valve, I was looking for him to consult. Googling his name I found out this bad notice. I feel so much sadness in my heart.
RIP my beloved Dr Joe Dilberto.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this ... sadly, I just found out this past Tuesday, January 30th 2018 that Dr. Joe has passed away.
He was also my heart surgeon referred to me by my cardiologist, Dr. Salazar and I was so thrilled he set me up with Dr. Joe as I read up on him and also heard from many others in the medical field that he was THE BEST in the state of Florida. As with many others, he also saved my life. He was always there with a big warm smile, a hug and very kind words. He loved his patients as if they were his own family. One of the happiest, kindest people I'd ever met. Taken too soon, he will be greatly missed. May you forever RIP, Dr. Joe!

I am so sad at the passing of Dr. Joe, when I first met him it was because I had lung cancer. When I looked into his eyes I new what ever he did I would be alright. He was the best Doctor ever and he spoke to you in regular words until you understood what was happening to you. I often think about him because he saved my life and wound up doing three surgeries on me. The world has lost a great man. My condolences to his family their heartbreak must be unbearable. To all of the Diliberto family , although a light from our lives has gone, a voice we loved is stilled, there a place is vacant within our hearts that can only be filled with a beautiful bouquet of memories filed of tears and joy. I wished God would of spared Joe for many more years. We will always hold Joe close within our hearts and there he will remain until we meet him again. So Rest In Peace Joe and thank you for all you have done for your community. You had a heart of Gold. I know God has given you the crown that you have truly won.

The years of love, friendship and an endless memories we all shared with Joe will Be forever charished. He will be in our hearts remain a friend and persons of great character. We all learned so much from him. He had a heart that was incomparable for his patients.

To all family and friends of Joe, remember that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love. I know Joe has enriched many of you !

To the family of Dr. Joe, we offer our sincere condolences to each of you. Although we have never met, our love and prayers are with you during this time.
In 2014, I was having issues and went in for a heart catherization. When I was awakened following the procedure, my wife was standing there with Dr. Diliberto telling me I could either have the quadruple in the morning or wait until Monday. Either way,I was going nowhere. My wife had no idea what to do with me when I was in recovery and open heart was imminent. Dr. Joe was in the recovery area and was truly placed there at that moment by GOD's hand. His comforting and reassuring words to my wife at that time and following my surgery the next morning was something that my wife and family, nor I will ever forget.

As Christians and Believers, we find so much comfort in knowing that Dr. Diliberto had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We are assured now of seeing him once again and able to say thank you face to face.

I have spoken with many professionals in the medical field since my surgery and whenever his name was mentioned I have been told that I had the best surgeon that could be found (not by coincidence, but truly by the Grace of God!)

Again, our thoughts and prayers are with those remaining behind. Dr. Joe, thanks for saving my life! My wife and I look forward to seeing you again in the Perfect setting in Heaven.

As I write this, I honestly can't believe Joe is gone. Many people knew Joe as a skilled surgeon but I knew him as an incredibly caring friend, a welcoming host that would bend over backwards to make you feel at home, a ridiculously funny guy that could match my immaturity with little or no effort, a passionate golfer who applied the same practice and intensity as his surgical skills but most importantly, a dedicated husband to Priscilla and father to Matt and Taytem. My sincere condolences to Priscilla, Jayne, John, Jay, Matt and all Joe's family and friends. My larger-than-life friend is already sorely missed.

More than 20 Christmas Days have passed since I first met Joe Diliberto. As many have said, Joe was an outstanding cardiac surgeon and an excellent golfer too. In recent years, Joe became intensely interested in spiritual matters and particularly in reading and understanding the Bible. Despite the profound suffering Joe endured in the last 3-4 months of his struggle with cancer, Joe's focus remained on the Lord, Jesus Christ. He would say, "This is nothing compared to what Jesus went through for me." The grace and dignity with which Joe endured his final trial was incredible. His favorite verses were Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight."

My love and prayers will always be with Priscilla, Matt and Taytem Diliberto and the entire Diliberto family. Joe would have loved to have beaten cancer back for years to enjoy your love on this earth. Instead, he is waiting to see you all again in the presence of the Lord in heaven. May the peace of the Lord Jesus be with you.

For one who passed away so young, Joe left a fantastic legacy. He saved thousands of lives, loved deeply, and was a great friend. His gentle ways, big smile and wonderful hugs will be greatly missed. He faced his troubles head on and taught us all how to handle adversity with grace and wit. We are all better for having known him.
Matthew, the last time we saw your father he was telling us what a great young man you are and how very proud and excited he was. You will have a special guardian angel with you at the Colorado School of Mines. Priscilla, he beamed when he talked about your wedding day and what it meant to be your husband. He said he wouldn't have wanted to take that final journey with anyone else. He felt very blessed to be Tatiana's adoptive father. He loved and valued his family and friends and made us all feel special. He always knew he was our favorite thoracic surgeon. He told us he knew he was going to heaven we are sure heaven is hosting some joyous reunions right now. We will hold him and all his loved ones in our hearts and prayers.

To: Jayne, John and Jay,
So shocked and saddened to learn of Joe's passing. I have many fond memories of when you were young, spending time at your home and Summer in Brewster. Joe, at one time, was my patient on the Pediatric Ward at Worcester City Hospital. He had determination at a very young age and it is not surprising that he went on to become an accomplished heart surgeon. Sincere sympathies to the entire Diliberto family. Wishing you peace and comfort in the days ahead.

We are so saddened to learn of Joe's passing. The best of thoughts go out to the entire family.

Joe's father was my Dad's best friend, so I was always around "Dr Joe Sr" growing up. Seems Joe Jr was just like his Dad...except for the golf part, family and meatballs are the exact same!

Seriously, it's been too many years to remember the last time I was around the family but because of the history I find it difficult to think of what to say.

Very sorry for your loss...

May your family find comfort in the Faith and may you Rest in Peace. Joe was an orderly at Worcester City Hospital and always visited me when I was the director of the pathology/histology lab. He was a wonderful bright young man and full of respect and love. Very sad news indeed.

Hearing this news this past weekend broke my heart I had the honor of working with "Dr Joe" at the Diagnostic Clinic when he started there until he left in 2003 I will always remember him and his smile. We had the upmost respect for each other and I will cherish his friendship always He was a kind man, showing up at my house after my accident in 98 with homemade spaghetti sauce that he had made That's who he was. I often question why some people are taken before their time, I know God has a plan, and we have to trust that, but I know he will be missed by many My heart goes out to his wife, and son, other family members and his close friends With much sympathy, Cindy

John, Jay and Jane,

Quite frankly, I can't get over the shock of this news. The memories at WA, visiting your home, your mom and dad, seeing Joe at his home in Clearwater, his visits to our home and all the fun in between. The picture says it all. I can feel the smile and know the hug would be next. My deepest sympathies for your loss.

Rest in Peace Dr. Joe you will be missed by so many that you helped and healed Your smile would light up any ICU you entered on rounds and you always stopped to say Hello no matter how busy you might have been God has a Special place for you in Heaven...

Confidence. Dr. Joe instilled confidence in my husband as he awaited the doctor who would perform his bypass. I encouraged my husband to return to Worcester as Northern medical practices can be ahead of those in Florida. Dr. Joe strode confidently into the room smiling and calming claiming, "I see you're from Worcester, too." Come to find out, my husband's Mass(-achusetts) doctor had been Dr. Joe's mentor (Dr. James McCready). Now, there was no way in the World that my husband would return to Worcester. In addition, numerous nurses assured us that we had been assigned to "the best doctor in the hospital." That was 22 yrs ago. We are still thankful for Dr. Joe and speak of him quite often including this past wknd when a close friend had bypass surgery. Today, my husband called to me: "You won't believe what I am reading...you won't believe this." It doesn't seem reasonable that we should read of Dr. Joe's passing, but that is not for us to judge. If not at this time, then we hope that one day you will be comforted in the knowledge that so many people are heartsick knowing that they have lost a hero. Dr. Joe is a hero. God bless us all.

To the Deliberto family-

Please accept my heartfelt condolences. I was so saddened to read of Dr Deliberto's passing. Our acquaintance dates back from Worcester City Hospital in the early 80's where his dad was a well respected physician and Joe was contemplating his admission into medical school.

His pleasant personality and wide smile brightened our days with his presence. He strived to be the best with his God given talents-selfless in his caring and giving ways. Joe's legacy of kindness, hard work and committment to providing his cardio- thoracic patients with his excellent expertise is well realized.

Dr Deliberto your work on Earth has been completed- God has called you home. May you rest in the light of God's peace- now reunited with your love ones who had gone before you. The world has lost a wonderful person. My Prayers are with your family and loved ones - that God will hold them close at this very difficult time of loss.

On October 7th, 2007, Dr. Diliberto quite literally held my heart and life in his hands. Through his incredible skills and medical talents he saved me from a likely imminent demise. I know a number of people who worked with Dr. D on a professional basis and they always said that he was absolutely the best of the best at what he did, and their personal affection for him was most evident.

I, like thousands of others, am grateful for the kind and great care that he provided me that has helped give me more than a decade of additional life to see my grandkids grow.

May your family finds peace and solitude in the knowledge of the good that he did for so many others in life.

My thoughts shortly after my Quadruple Bypass.
Dr. Joe's passing is such a loss for an incredibly Gifted Surgeon and Human being.
My sincere condolences to Dr. Joes Family members. Dr. Joe....Thanks

March 6, 2008
Dear Dr. Joe,
I just wanted to take a moment to send to you and your staff, Nancys and my most sincere thanks.
Although I wish it could have been under different circumstances, it is a pleasure to have met you and I believe that it was without doubt, my good fortune to have had you as my surgeon.
We found that your expertise, skill, and your personal consideration beyond reproach!
I truly believe that many a physician would learn and benefit if they would only follow the examples you so enthusiastically provide.
It is only just now that I am realizing just what I have experienced and how your efforts provided me the most positive results that I could have desired.
Once again, Thank You so very much for your help!!!
My Sincere Regards,
Curt Treloar
