Joseph A. Giovannitti Sr.

Joseph A. Giovannitti Sr., age 73 years, of Paulsboro, died Thursday, December 9, 2004 in Underwood Memorial Hospital, Woodbury. He was born in Hammonton and lived in Paulsboro all of his life.

Mr. Giovannitti was a meat cutter, meat manager and former owner of Royal Meat Market, Paulsboro. He later worked for Teamster’s Union Local #56 as a meat cutter in several local stores. During his retirement he enjoyed working at Botto’s in Mt. Royal.

Mr. Giovannitti was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Paulsboro and the Carmel S. Morina Sons of Italy Lodge #2580, Paulsboro.

Mr. Giovannitti served on the Paulsboro Board of Education for 18 years and was vice president and president for several years. Mr. Giovannitti was also a member of the Board of Directors for the Gill Memorial Library and the Fort Billings Historical Site in Paulsboro.

During his lifetime, Mr. Giovannitti was honored by many organizations including the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame; Paulsboro High School Sports Hall of Fame; Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame; and he was also awarded the Community Service Award by Club Ten. In 1999, the Paulsboro Wrestling Association honored him on the 50th Anniversary of his N.J. State Championship in Wrestling at 112 pounds.

Mr. Giovannitti was a Paulsboro High School Outstanding Graduate and served as the Grand Marshall of the Paulsboro High School Homecoming Parade. He was an early member of the Paulsboro Midget Wrestling Organization and coached for several years. Mr. Giovannitti enjoyed reading and was an avid Red Raider sports fan.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Adina Giovannitti (nee Manzoni); his children, Loretta and James Savidge of Paulsboro; Joseph Jr. and Yvonne Giovannitti of Paulsboro, Michael and Cheryl Giovannitti of Gibbstown, Lisa Giovannitti and Tim Roy of Paulsboro, John and Cheri Giovannitti of Paulsboro, Adina and Stephen Mogar of Gibbstown and Vincent and Ann Giovannitti of Gibbstown; his grandchildren, Liza, David, Joseph III, Gwen and her husband, A.J., Jessica, Jason, Laura, Andrew, Michael, Beau, Rachel, Gina, Alayna, Leigh, Stephen, Gina, Nicole, Carlo and Marcella; three great- grandsons; his brothers, Fred Giovannitti of Washington Township, Carlo Giovannitti of Paulsboro, Thomas Giovannitti of Fort Worth, Texas and Anthony Giovannitti of Carrolton, Ga.; his sisters, Janine Fout of Paulsboro, Conchetta Smith of Lakewood, Colo., Maria Tahamont of Collingswood and Ann Jensen of Bay Village, Ohio; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mr. Giovannitti was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Angeline Giovannitti.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 13, 2004 in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 7th and Beacon avenues, Paulsboro. Friends may call Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday in the McBRIDE-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 228 West Broad Street, Paulsboro. Interment Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro. Contributions can be made to St. John’s RC Church, Beacon Ave., Paulsboro, NJ 08066 or Paulsboro Wrestling Association, c/o Joann Hoehn, 522 Nassau Ave., Paulsboro, NJ 08066.
