Joseph Kalmar Sr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 22, 2025.
Paris Twp. - Joseph D. Kalmar Sr. age 82 of Paris Twp passed away peacefully into eternal rest on Friday night July 18,2025 at his residence. He was born on April 9,1943 in Akron, OH the son of the late Joseph John Kalmar and Ernestine M. (Armbruster) Kalmar. Joe had lived in Paris Twp since 1995, formerly of Akron. Joe married the love of his life, Sandra (Sandy) Cobbs on Sept. 20, 1995, and they enjoyed almost 30 years of wonderful marriage together. Joe worked as a Police Detective for Hudson Police Department for 25 years retiring in 2004. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) for many years. He loved golfing, playing cards, and going to Las Vegas with his wife. Joseph is preceded in death by his parents, and 1 daughter: Lora Beskitt.

He is survived by: his wife: Sandra Kalmar of Paris Twp, 1 daughter: Lisa & John Flood of Canton,1 son: Joseph D. Kalmar Jr. of Tallmadge, 6 grandchildren, & 4 great grandchildren. Lisa remembers as a child being bundled up in the early morning hours in the back of the station wagon, wrapped in blankets, and off they went to pick Dad from his night shift at Goodyear. They would then head home and prepare for school while Dad would sleep. If they were lucky, Dad would work a day shift and then after picking him up, they would go to get Thacker's hamburgers and an occasional ice cream from Strickland's. Dad eventually went to work for the police department and was a policeman for as long as I remember. Lisa always remembers that Dad worked at least 2 jobs throughout her youth. Never really realizing then that it was so he could give them what they needed.

All his kids got older and went their different ways, but they always knew Dad was there if they needed him. When he married Sandy we knew he had finally found someone that was good for him, someone who challenged him to be his best, but loved him for who he was. For the past 30 years, Sandy has been a friend and family to all of us. Dad was never overly emotional but we knew he loved us, all of us despite our troubles.

Sandy remembers that when she met Joe he was a "City Boy" from Akron who moved to the country, and got to experience the joys of "Country Living" (not always good). Joe was always positive and made things better. He was Proud to be a police officer. As a husband, he was always loving and supportive. Joe was the best partner ever.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no services. The family has requested that all donations please be made to the Archbishop Hoban High School 1 Holy Cross Blvd. Akron, OH 44306-1500 in his memory.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls.

Joe was a dedicated family man, police officer and a friend to everyone who met him. I had known Joe since the early 70´s when he served on the Springfield Township Police Department and I was a tow truck driver where we became best of friends. Joe was my best friend. Joe was always there when times were good but more so when life wad down. Joe was by my side when my mother passed away. Always there at the weakest and strongest times. I will never forget the good times from the annual fishing trips to Michigan, playing cards and the list is like never ending. We all say we have a best friend and I can from the bottom of my heart say Joe is a true best friend. Thank you for being my life best friend. Say hello to Mac. Until we meet again RIP buddy.

I knew Joe for many years, both in law enforcement work and golfing. He was a good cop and a good man. Rest easy my friend.
