Gettysburg - Josephine Griese, 84, of Gettysburg died Sunday, May 21, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 25, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gettysburg, with Fr. Mark Axtmann officiating. Burial will in St. John The Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Onaka. Visitations will be Wednesday from 1-5 p.m. at the Luce Funeral Home in Gettysburg with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial be directed to the Bartlett Fire Auxiliary, Team Trish Fund, P.O. Box 8163, Bartlett, IL 60103. These funds will assist granddaughter-in-law, Trish Simon, who is battling cancer. Josephine Barondeau was born Aug. 26, 1921, near Onaka, S.D., to Joseph and Magdeline (Daschle) Barondeau. After her schooling, Josephine worked for different families in the area. On April 10, 1944, Josephine married Lyle Griese at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Onaka. Josephine was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed being a homemaker, working on the farm, caring for animals, crocheting, quilting, cooking, gardening, tending to her flowers and belonging to the Springs Extension Club, Altar societies in both Onaka and Gettysburg, and being an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary in Gettysburg. She also thoroughly enjoyed her 33 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren and never stopped her concerns for them, even in her last days. She will be remembered for her patience and courage all her life and during her recent illness. Left to cherish her life is her husband, Lyle; children, Carol (Roger) Simon of Tolstoy, Dwayne (JoAnn) Griese of Woodbridge, Va., Kathy (Mike) Geraets of Dell Rapids, Marcia (Roger) Liebig of Gettysburg, Donald (Theresa) Griese of Aberdeen, Mary (Doug) Turner of Bowdle and Linda (Ken) Sevigny of Davenport, Iowa; 33 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Erma Vogel, Anna Mary Schaefer, Bernadette Sanderson, Delores (Milton) Cunningham and Annette (Allen) Weisbeck. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, Gerald Lyle, daughter, Joan Bernadette, brothers, Andrew and Joseph, three brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
