Joshua Arcus Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 11, 2007.
ARCUS _ Joshua and Raya (Hafso) Josh: August 4, 1976 - April 3, 2007 Raya: June 29, 1977 - April 3, 2007 We are the music makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams... It is with the greatest sadness in our lives that we announce the sudden passing of Josh and Raya on April 3, 2007. Josh was born and raised in Adelaide, Australia. He was a truly unique individual. He is loved by and will be very missed by his family and numerous friends in Australia and around the world. Josh leaves behind his mum Judy (and her husband Rob); his dad Geoff (and his wife Rachael); his sister Naomi and her husband Paul Kusic; and Josh's nephews, Noah Paul and Oliver Joshua. Josh's adventurous spirit led him to many countries including the Philippines, Mongolia, China and Russia. He met Raya in 1997 in the Northern Territory of Australia on a mission trip and this began a six year email and package sending friendship which culminated in him moving to Calgary in 2004. Raya was born in Drumheller and raised in Red Deer, Alberta. Raya leaves behind her mom and dad, Ruth and Ches Hafso; sister Tavia; nephew Koen Gabriel; brothers, Kjel and Jaden; and sister-in-law Zosia; grandparents, Art and Val Dahlen, and Roy and Alice Hafso. Raya traveled extensively and had friends all over the world. She met Josh during her travels in Australia where they fell in love. Josh was a musician and Raya loved singing back-up vocals with him at his gigs. They had an army of friends who loved them and supported them unconditionally. They got married in Adelaide, Australia and moved to Calgary where they lived for the last two years. Raya taught English as a second language and was a warm and fun-loving teacher. They had just set off on a new adventure, packed up their car with guitars and a keyboard, and their cat Sicily, and started their move to magical Montreal. Josh was to continue his creative job as a barista and was also planning to get involved in the music scene there; Raya was starting a new job, and hoping to get pregnant by the time they went back to visit family and friends this coming Christmas in Adelaide. They had a car full of dreams and songs to write. But they did not make it through the road trip to Montreal. In our mourning we see their faces and know that we are responsible to carry their dreams. They were driving with the angels, and they have gone ahead of us, to take the place that their God and their Father has prepared for them. Thank you so much Father for allowing us to have Josh and Raya in our lives. We celebrate the laughter, compassion, joy, and love for life and the simplest pleasures in life that they shared with us. "Your Beauty... (Raya and Josh was) that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." 1 Peter 3:3-4. The Funeral will be held at the CrossRoads Church, Queen Elizabeth Highway 2 and 32 Street, Red Deer on Friday, April 13 at 2:00 p.m. Donations can be made in honour of Raya and Josh at World Vision Canada, where they sponsored a little boy from Brazil. Condolences may be forwarded to the family at www.eventidefuneralchapels.com . Service and Interment Providers: EVENTIDE FUNERAL CHAPELS, 4820 - 45 Street, Red Deer. Phone: 1-403-347-2222.

Although I have not seen Raya since graduation, I did my undergraduate degree with her and have so many fun memories of being on "UPSI" together. I found out about her passing this morning on the TWU alumni email and my heart feels so heavy and sad. I never had the opportunity to meet Josh, but if he won the heart of such a beautiful spirit, I know he must have been an amazing person.
I wish peace and comfort to those whose lives are impacted by this great loss.

I keep up an interest in the lives of our family's members all around the world. Often it is good news, with births and marriages to report. To have to record this entry saddens me immensely. I was intending shortly to contact Josh and Raya to say 'hello' via email. Now I can't, and the tributes of others tell me that I missed the opportunity to talk to a bright and much loved couple snatched from us far too early. My deepest sympathy for both your family's loss. Rob Arcus

Raya was my teacher when I was in LSC. She had a pretty smile. Many people know her who was beautiful, kind, intelligent.I usually liked Raya. So I'm more sad that such bad incident was occured to her.
I would miss them a lot.
May their souls rest in peace.

Raya hes been my English teacher in Calgary durying my studies... she was the best person I met there. One time, she proposed us to listen to her husband's music, where she was singing to, and she was like an angel.
As an angel, she hes returned to her home, the sky...
we will miss them forever.

I was so sad to hear the news of Raya and Joshua's accident. Raya and I did our undergrad degrees together at Trinity and we were on the Psychology society executive together for 3 years. She was always full of energy and brightened everyone's day with her big smile and infectious laugh. I haven't seen or heard from her for 5 years but my tears are a telltale sign she was, and will always be, my friend.

Josh and Raya were my next-door neighbours in Calgary - I'm truly saddened to hear of their passing. I will always remember and enjoy the sounds of the music Josh played coming through the wall we shared.

How can life be so incomprehensible? Raya is in my memory as a beautiful, smart, hilarious, and loving person. My heart is breaking over this tragedy. I never met Josh, but I always liked thinking that Raya must really be in love with him because despite geographical complications, she still knew she was meant to be with him.

My thoughts and prayers are with Josh and Raya's parents, siblings, and extended family and friends.

Sweet Raya...a most cherished blessing to our family...and Josh, an added bonus ! Both loved dearly.
"One of these days, God is going to pull back the shades of night, pin them with a star, open the door of the morning and flood your world with the sunshine of His love and light." (Adrian Rogers)
Thank you Lord, that they are yours. Help us to remember in our sorrow that... "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints." Psalm 116:15
In His love,

I would like to extend my deepest and sincerest condolences to those who are left to mourn the passing of Josh and Raya.

Raya was one of the few people who extended a warm welcome to me when I first attended Camille in 1993. Having left all that I had back home in the Philippines to move with my family, starting all over with new friends proved to be a challenge. But with Raya, she treated me like I was a friend and for that I will be forever grateful.

I am extremely privileged to have known you as a person and am extremely saddened by your passing. I do however find comfort knowing that you have touched so many lives in so many great ways.
Both of you have truly lived your lives to the fullest and only aspire to live the life and the legacy that you both leave behind.

To your families whom you leave to mourn: I am but one person who have felt the love of your daughter and son. Although I do not know Josh, I know that he is a good person. I am so sorry for your loss. May the Lord provide you with the strength to help you and your loved ones in your time of sorrow.

When I´ve received the notice, I couldn´t believe. I thougth that I was´t reading of the correct way... I didn´t have chance to know Raya very well, but while I had English classes with Raya in july of last year, I could feel the great person that she was. I hope that everybody remember all the good moments that they had with both, and believe that they went to a better place.

Even though I didn't know Josh and Raya (I am a friend of Grandmother Val), it is apparent from the tributes that they have already left a legacy . The memories they made with so many render goodbyes all the harder, but these will be treasured in the long run. And so we mourn with those who mourn. May God hold you all close and bring comfort to your souls.
