Joy Gilbert Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 21, 2025.
On July 15th, 2025 Joy Doris Gilbert (nee Handlos) age 71 of Milwaukee, Wisconsin has been set free of her illness and pain, and has gone home to our Lord.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents Herman and Ruth (Winter) Handlos Jr., sister Christine Handlos, brother Jeff Handlos and sister Sherry Handlos-Luckmann.

Joy is survived by her devoted, loving caring husband of 47 years Michael J. Gilbert, sister Lorena Handlos, brother-in-law Gar Luckmann, and specially loved nephew Nicholas Handlos. She is also survived by many relatives and friends.

Joy was born, raised and lived in Milwaukee all of her life. She graduated from Washington High School in 1972.

Joy attended Mt. Tabor church where she enjoyed the youth group, being the Easter Bunny at the Easter breakfasts and singing in the church choir. Her sweet voice blending perfectly with her moms when they sang together. Along with singing, she gained a love of playing instruments from her dad. Joy played accordion, guitar, keyboard, and a few others.

Joy and Mike made many memories traveling to different states and simple day trips. When traveling out of state Joy would plan an itinerary so that they could hit the casinos. Renting cabins with her parents were more good times. Get togethers with family and friends were always special to Joy.

Joy worked various jobs thru the years, her last was working as a church administrator at Wellington Park Lutheran Church and also led a seniors group.

Her love, belief and faith in the Lord has always been strong.

Joy's presence among us has touched many, many lives and she will live forever in our hearts as we all miss her here on earth.

There will be no services.

Our heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the staff, aides and nurses of both Francisan Woods and St. Croix Hospice for the loving care shown to Joy.

Joy, I will miss you so much. You were my dear friend & sister in Christ. A great cribbage partner, fun to be around. We had many good times together (you, Mike, me & Leigh). Wish it could've been longer. R.I.P. my dear friend & as my Gradma always said "it's not good-bye, just so long".

I remember Joy as a very active member at Mt. Tabor Church and her involvement with the choir. She had a sense of humor which she shared often at choir rehearsals. Singing duets with her mother was a special treat for the congregation.
Joy is now free from earthly troubles and is in the welcoming arms of our Lord. Rest in Peace Joy. Lynne

Joy- so appropriately named. She truly exuded joy, sweetness and warmth. Joy and Gilly were a constant presence in our lives and her sweet smile and warm hugs will be genuinely missed. Gilly- I have always admired the devotion you and Joy outwardly showed. It was evident you are soul mates just by being in your orbit. I am so deeply sorry for your loss and I am praying for comfort on your heart as you navigate this great loss. Know you are loved and we are all here for you in this season. Joy- you are with Jesus, dancing and singing in heaven now. For that I rejoice. Godspeed great lady!

Since I was a kid we would hang out over by Gilly and Joy's with Leigh and Char, watching Gilly build cars in the garage learning and enjoying great company! As well as hanging out in the back yard and at many Clouse/Carr family gatherings with Gilly and Joy.
Joy helped so many people, and was a great person.
She played a part in helping me grow my small electrical business with making repairs on the Wellington Park church and providing referrals of friends and family. For that, I will always be grateful!
She blessed our first home and was always excited to see our kids grow and was always a pleasure to see at various gatherings.
We will miss you Joy!

We were so blessed to have had Joy in our lives...She was such a bright light my entire life, and as sad as we are to hear of her passing, I know she is at peace now and with her Lord and Savior. Her smiling eyes, cheerful smile, and warm hugs will be greatly missed. Sending endless love and hugs to Gilly and all other loved ones during this difficult time.

I have fond memories of Joy when she was a leader of our youth group at Mt Tabor. She was always happy and fun to be around. She definitely had an impact on us wayward youth!

I am lucky to be one of Joy's cousins and to count her and her husband as friends in addition to being family. I will miss her creativity and gentle sense of humor. With sorrow...
