Julio DeSanctis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 12, 2011.
ORRINGTON and OLD TOWN - "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." We don't know if he was familiar with this quote but the man certainly lived it. Julio Vincent DeSanctis III, born Dec. 4, 1943, in Vineland, N.J., to Elsie DeSanctis and the late Julio DeSanctis Jr., passed away peacefully Sept. 9, 2011, while surrounded by family after a nine-year struggle with cancer. Julio grew up with six younger sisters, Barbara Kay Shapiro, Beverly Jean Johnson, Marjorie Lynn DeSanctis, Jacalyn Rae Matkowski, Cheryl Lee DeSanctis and Nicola Marie DeSanctis, and on a street where most of the neighbors were also relatives. He attended Vineland High, where he excelled in wrestling and generaled in trouble making, and went on to achieve a Bachelor of Arts degree at his beloved West Liberty State College in a mere seven years. At West Liberty he continued his illustrious wrestling career both on the mat and, on occasion, in saloon parking lots. Julio received his juris doctor at the University of San Francisco, much to the dismay of a legion of district attorneys. He married his high school sweetheart, Joan Beverly Donohue, Aug. 27, 1966; they recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. Joan DeSanctis is currently the pastor at Old Town United Methodist Church and Stillwater Federated Church. Julio began his law practice in the late 1960s in San Francisco fighting to end the Vietnam War before moving on to Atlantic City, N.J., to help get narcotic addicts into rehabilitation programs instead of jail, long before such advocacy was common. The program, NARCO, still exists today. Julio and Joan moved on to Pittsburgh, where Julio attended seminary and Joan gave birth to their first child, Julio Vincent DeSanctis IV. Shortly thereafter the little family made their way to Bangor. Julio had a short lived career as one of the world's most interesting taxi drivers before turning his attentions to what would become his lifelong pursuit, driving other attorneys, judges, clerks, cops, witnesses and criminals nuts. In what could only be described as a ravenous desire for justice - and perhaps a bit of just always wanting to be right - Julio stood head and shoulders above the crowd. After more than 35 years of defense work his reputation for pugnacity and as a champion of the underdog is unparalleled. The family settled in Orrington where they welcomed their daughter, Francesca Donohue DeSanctis, and opened a small convenience store/ice cream and pizza parlor/antique shop and eventual home law office, living there for 20 years. They followed that up with brief stays in Eddington, Woodstown, N.J., and are now in Old Town. We hope that everyone holds their memories of Julio DeSanctis as close to their heart as his family does. Visiting hours will be held 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, and 9 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Old Town United Methodist Church, 744 Stillwater Ave., Old Town, where a service of celebration will begin noon Wednesday. A reception will be held after the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to CancerCare of Maine, 33 Whiting Hill Road, Brewer, ME 04412 or The Joan and Julio DeSanctis Memorial Fund at Camp Mechuwana, P.O. Box 277, Winthrop, ME 04364.

Many fond memories of my old friend! One very hot summer day, knowing we had no air conditioning at my house, Jules invited me to spend the night in his air conditioned bedroom! That was his nature , to be kind! Gone, too soon! The bonus that sleepover was having breakfast with his beautiful, twin sisters!

Joan, Julio, & Francie. What a wonderful service and tribute to Julio on Wednesday. It was 2+ hrs. of prayer, laughter, and tears. He was a cherished friend and will be truly missed. Hank's friendship goes back to high school and college; and YES, there are millions of stories. God bless and give you strength. Julio is watching over you and most likely conducting court in heaven. Love from your old Vineland friends,

Joan, I'm so sorry to hear about Julio's death. Clearly, his passion for the underdog and for justice impacted this area and many, many lives in the court system as well as in the church. God bless you and grant you peace and comfort to you and your family.

To Joan and Family,
If it wasn't for the relationship that my father Lou Piccone had with the Desanctis Family, I would probably never accomplished the daunting task of "making it in the National Football League. I believe that Julio had seen me play and offered a suggestion to my father that "hey, Lou I believe that your son Louis could play for West Liberty, Jules Alma Mater. I've always owed a debt of gratitude to Julio for his recommendation; without his knowledge and insight who know what would have happened to a wayward young man!
If there is anything that I can assist with please don't hesitate to contact me. I know that my brother Steve and Julio were good friends and made people laugh all the time!
My deepest sympathies on your loss because I am certain that the space that he left will be felt in the Hearts and Spirits of the people that had the good fortune to know him!
God's Speed!

Joan,

I am so sorry that I couldn't come to the calling hours or funeral. I love Julio. He was so special. I believe he would understand that I was in the County for the State Board of Ed., advocating for all the children in Maine. He was such a wonderful advocate for people (all the downtrodden including children), and such an inspiration when we wondered if the constitution meant anything.

More than that, you two had such a wonderful partnership with each other. I always told him that you were a saint to put up with him. But you were his strength and he was yours. And I believe he took my chiding as I took his.

If we can help in any way, please call.
You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Love to you, Julio, and Francesca.

Dearest Joan and family, I am saddened to hear of Julio's passing but know that his life was rich and full. Joan, Francie & Julio,
Julio touched the lives of so many people and was such an inspiration all you need is to read just a few of these messages or some of the blogs written about him to see what Julio ment to us. I feel richer to have known him and honored to have been his friend! He may be gone but he'll always be remembered and those memories I will always cherish. My love, thoughts and prayers are with you all.

It has been a privilege to be a friend of Julio and Joan for more than four decades. The term "sui generis" lacked sufficient definition until Julio came along. He married courage to generosity in a manner only Joan matched. A good example can be humbling or even oppressive, but in their case it was inspiring.

September 14, 2011

Joan, Francie and Jules,

Julio was truly one of a kind! With a heart of gold, a love of life and a passion for justice, he will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. The obituary and the many kind remarks in this guest book are a testament to his comittment to others. We will never forget him. May fond memories remain with you always.

Dear Joan & family,
Our sincerest sympathy to you & your loved ones. As a child, I remember Julio and his huge persona. As an adult, that did not change. I can see him in my mind's eye at my wedding, dancing up a storm with a ribbon from the napkin tied around his ponytail! I have fond memories of him and am grateful to him for all he did for my family through the years. May God give you strength during this most difficult time.
Sincerely,

The Longfellow Family.

Julio helped our family through many trials and tribulations. He went above and beyond his duty as a lawyer to make sure the injustices put upon our family were made right. He was amazing to watch in court. It was like the court belonged to him and him only. Our family will surely miss him and will forever hold a piece of him in our hearts for what he has done for us. So sorry for your loss.

Joan....I don't know if you remember me but I am one of those attorneys who...on occasion....extracted some of my own hair over my dealings with your late husband. That said, I can tell you he was for wont of a better word a true "character"...we worked at it endlessly and had no particular inhibition in telling you so. The world is a better place when inhabited by "characters" and your husband contributed greatly in that regard. I will always remember him...with a smile...and I know that means more to him...and perhaps you...than anything. God Bless!!

Julio has always been one of my favorite attorneys. When he showed up in the attorney's room at the courthouse I knew I could look forward to being entertained endlessly, even if we were waiting for hours! I'll never forget the time he suddenly burst into song while we were waiting for a case to come up--it was close to Christmas and we harmonized the first verse through to the end! After he became ill he never lost his sense of humor for a moment. He will be sorely missed.
May the source of peace bring peace to all who mourn.
Sharon Silberman-Hummels, Esq.

Joan and family,
Julio was bigger than life. He was always present at the CDS activities, not just for his children but for ALL the children. His presence on earth will be missed by an entire generation. God will have his hands full!

In 1998, my father asked me if a friend of his could come to my house to "study" my then 4-yr-old son for some sort of project or report for a class he was taking. I couldn't believe I agreed to this, but in came Julio who was a friend of the Day family for many years and we had a very wonderful couple of hours watching, analyzing and laughing at my 4 yr-old. Julio was a kind man with a wonderful heart. God bless Julio and the entire DeSanctis family....-Christine Smith (Brewer)

Julio and Joan so enthusiastically and lovingly welcomed us to Bangor in 1974 where they were themselves newcomers. They were wonderful friends! When I returned to college to further my Associate Degree, Julio was one of the first professors I met when he was teaching Business Law at Husson. He was wonderful and the impression he made has never been forgotten!

Our paths crossed many more times over the years in many other venues. Each time was a genuine and pleasurable experience. My husband knew Julio professionally through two careers. Again, always interesting and thought provoking. Never a dull moment and he was always challenging, making people do better, set higher goals, work smarter, do your job to a T. Always with the Julio humor which would just twinkle from his eye - but yet with stearness when it should be there.

We had heard of Julio's illness and as always pray daily for friends and acquaintences who are ill. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers reach out to his family and closest friends. A man lost far to young!

Maine is fortunate to have had Julio and his family come to and adopt this state as their true home. He fought the good fight with faith, honor and I am sure dignity. RIP Julio - both Ralph and I are honored to have had our lives paths cross!

I worked as a receptionist/legal secretary for Julio when he had an office on the 2nd floor of a State Street office building, along with Dick Hall and Gene Ford, back in the 70s. I will never forget him. He was quite a character and despite his rebellous nature, he had a heart as big as the sun. No matter what the circumstance, you couldn't be in his company without smiling. You will be missed Julio. My sincere condolences to your family.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I know he will be greatly missed, When the competion respects and honors him you know that he was quite a man. He represented me in court for something that college kids do and it is something that I will never forget and have recounted the story many times. I was't even in his class at Husson but just because I was a student there he helped me out and never charged me. I am very sorry for your loss, I know from experience with cancer that his suffering is over and that is our only consolation and we know that he is in heaven giving them a run for their money!
