Junior Smart, 84, of South Abner Street, Carlsbad, N.M., went to be with his Lord surrounded by his family and friends, Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at Carlsbad Cemetery with Pastor Jimmy Tarvin officiating.
Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors.
Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Junior Smart was born Sept. 14, 1925, to Ruben Brice and Alpha M. (Schoolcraft) Smart in Las Cruces, N.M. He moved to Carlsbad as a young boy. Junior served his country in the US Army during WW II. He married Pearl Trotter April 10, 1964. Junior was a foreman on several ranches for many years. He also worked at Constructors Inc. for several years and the Carlsbad Current-Argus where he delivered papers. Junior was known for mowing weeds on vacant lots with his tractor. He was a very good mechanic and exceptionally loving to his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents; son Jay Smart; brothers Billy Smart, Russell Smart, Claude Estes, Joel Estes, and sister Jewell Kirkes.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl Smart of Carlsbad, N.M.; four children: Alma Lane and husband, Joseph of Carlsbad, N.M., Sherry Vasey of Carlsbad, N.M., Michael Smart of Carlsbad, N.M. and Stephanie Weldy of Corpus Christi, Texas; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four brothers: Walter Smart, George Smart, Pete Smart and Bob Smart, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Thomas Ellis, Daniel Ellis, Tyler Ellis, Dustin Ellis, Jeffrey Smart, Brandon Vasey, Justin Weldy and Darren Lane. Honorary pallbearers are Jay Trotter, Shawn Walker, Chunky Click, Timothy Trotter, Ben Plum, Noley Burton, Bob Henderson and Don Ellis.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to help with final expenses at P.O. Box 881, Carlsbad, NM 88221.

Mr. Smart,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the U.S. Army during WW II and for being a member of the Greatest Generation. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
