Junius N. Yates was born the youngest of three children to the late Jessie Yates and Dilsey (Jones) on May 25, 1923 in Suffolk, Virginia. He quietly transitioned this life, on Friday evening, July 6, 2012. He was preceded in death by his 2 sister's, Jessie M. Tice and Hannah L. Spurlock; 1 nephew, Eddie Spurlock and 1 niece, Yvonne Scott. As a young man, he enlisted in the Army (1943-46), where he served his country before receiving an honorable discharge. While in the Armed Forces, he toured Europe, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Philippine Island, Japan and Korea. Junius attended and was a graduate of Wilberforce University where he earned his B.S. in Education. He later attended and was a graduate of Teachers College at Columbia University where he earned his Master's degree in Education. While at Columbia University he became a Librarian's Assistant. He went on to teach social Studies and English at William C. Jason. Later he became Principal at William C. Jason Sr. High School. Junius moved to New York to serve as the High School Counselor at Westbury Long Island School. While there he counseled many students, seeing that his students attended college, until he retired and moved back to Delaware. He was Field Solicitor, Panelist for Sussex Co. Federation of Delta Teachers; Reporter, Delaware Scholastic Study Counsel; Delegate, Legislative Committee, Delaware State Education Assn., Advisor, United Youth Conference, Sponsor, National Honor Society Member; Delaware State Education Assn., National Counsel for Social Studies; National Education Assn., Delaware Federation of Teachers, American Teachers Assn., and Omega Psi Phi. He leaves to cherish his memory: devoted nephew's, Ronald (Diane), Roland (Andrea) Spurlock; 1 niece, Audrey Merritt; a long-time good family friend, Ronald Mifflin; a host of great niece's and nephew's, students and friends. Funeral 6 pm Wednesday, July 18, at Congo Funeral Home, 2317 N. Market Street, Wilmington, DE 19802; viewing 4-5:45 pm. Burial, Delaware Veterans Memorial Park.
