Karl R. Hesson, 67, of Scottdale (Owensdale), died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, in UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh. Karl was born Dec. 15, 1933, in Owensdale, a son of Edna Pletcher Hesson of Owensdale and the late Howard W. Hesson (who died May 13, 1986). Karl was a retired salesman and was also involved in numerous business enterprises throughout his life, including Hesson Fundraising of Washington, Pa., and Karl's Pizza Shop in Scottdale. He also had been a free-lance writer in the late 1960s for the Independent Observer newspaper, for which he wrote weekly articles in the column ``Karl's Korner.' He was a former member and past vice president of the Scottdale Borough Council; a member of B.P.O.E. Lodge 777 and Marion Lodge 562, F&AM, both of Scottdale; and was affiliated with the Owensdale United Methodist Church. Karl played many positions for the Fayette All-Star Baseball League and was a member and served as secretary-treasurer for the Fay-West Baseball League. In addition to his mother, Edna Hesson, Karl is survived by his children: Daryl Hesson and wife, Patricia, of Safety Harbor, Fla., Gary Hesson and wife, Theresa, of Lewistown, David Hesson and wife, Miki, of Forest Hills, N.Y., and Beth (Garner) McSalls and husband, Jim, of Tampa, Fla.; two grandchildren, Patrick Hesson and Billy Davis; two stepgrandchildren, Matthew and Melissa Duncan; four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Torie and Tanner Hesson and Kaden Davis; two brothers, Donald Hesson and wife, Carol, of Connellsville and John Hesson and wife, Kay, of Greenville; a sister, Charlotte Hesson of Connellsville; and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 406 E. Washington St., Mt. Pleasant, Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Siglinde L. Becker officiating. Interment will take place in the Scottdale Cemetery. The Scottdale Elks will conduct a memorial service Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and Marion Lodge 562 will conduct a memorial ritual at 8 p.m., both in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Regional Family YMCA, 490 Bessemer Road, Mt. Pleasant, PA 15666, or a charity of one's choice.
