Stickley, Karl Brandt, Jr.

Karl Brandt Stickley, Jr., 84, passed away May 22, 2014 in Lutherville, MD. A native of the Binghamton area, he was a graduate of University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, and a US Army First Lieutenant during the Korean Conflict. He was a successful businessman, developing Stickley Photo into a major corporation in the photo-finishing industry. He was a mentor to many, a patron of the arts, and an accomplished student of wide-ranging avocations. He was a great support to his community, a loving and supportive husband and father, and a model of ethics and virtue: charity, benevolence, selflessness and humility. He was a pragmatist who dared to dream, pursue his interests, and communicate with insight, intelligence and wit. Karl's life was full.

He was predeceased by his parents, Karl B. Stickley and Julia Stickley, and his wife of 44 years, Jean C. Stickley. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Lydia H. Stickley and her sons, Stewart and Brinton Hoover, his 5 children and their families: Julia and Peter Reckdenwald and their sons and daughter-in-law: Erik and Ashley Reckdenwald and Brian, Jennifer Shields and her son EJ, David Stickley and Eric Bemberess, Sarah and Edward Tye and their children: Julia, Chelsea, Katie, Amy and Michael, and Brandt and Jennifer Stickley, and their son, Jonas, and his sisters Virginia Sampson and Josephine Hiller.

A memorial service will be held at Zion Episcopal Church, Greene, July 12, 2014 at 11 AM, with Deacon David Stickley officiating.

In 1961, Karl hired me into a part time job driving the small van to area drug stores, picking up exposed film and dropping off developed prints, collecting and depositing the store owners payments. He had me do odd jobs like drying b/w enlargements and on weekend painting the interior of his facility. It was lots of fun, and Karl was a great guy to work for. I'm so grateful for that early opportunity to learn from an accomplished boss. Later, I too graduated the Wharton School and built my own company. My experience with Karl was an important building block in my career. Thanks Karl.

Though I never met Karl, he is often remembered and spoken of in sports car circles. He was a dear friend of the Binghamton Automobile Racing Club, and a great help in processing photos for the club's newsletters. I have never heard anything but the highest praise and kind words for Karl, and he will not be forgotten.

Before our wedding to be on July 7, 1960, Michael's Best Man had to bow out because of family illness, an usher was promoted to Best Man, and Karl accepted a request to become the 4th usher. Many thanks from us. Karl and Michael were both involved in sports car racing. Karl took Andrea to a race before she met Michael.

Julie,Jennifer,David,Sarah,Brandt and families,
We are so saddened by your father's passing. He leaves us with so many fond memories, especially at the farm when we were all growing up! I used to love to go see him at Stickley photo whenever we went there. He gave us one of the nicest camera's for a wedding gift!!! Now he is resting peacefully. We will talk to you soon.

Lydia,
We are very sorry about the passing of Uncle Charlie, as we have always known him. How fortunate you both were to reconnect and how lucky we were to be able to share wonderful times with you.
