Katy Garman
July 5, 1945 - January 29, 2021
Charlotte, North Carolina - To know Katy is to love her. She is Beloved. Katy Jo Vargo Garman's life began on July 5, 1945 and ended too soon on January 29, 2021 after a fifteen month battle with gastrointestinal cancer. Katy's effusive warmth and sincere hospitableness allowed others, both strangers and friends alike, to feel at home in her presence. She lived her life in service to others. Whether it be to her middle and high school students as a Spanish teacher of forty-four years, or to her seven adoring grandchildren in which she became an enthusiastic full-time grandmother after retirement as a teacher. She served in her community as well, volunteering her time, energy and cooking talents, while having the rare gift of jumping into an immediate need and doing whatever she could to help without waiting for instruction.
Katy felt most at home outside in her garden and with her soulmate and best friend, Jake, who share forty-eight years of marriage together. Her flower garden thrived under her care. Even as she was known to be thrifty, buying flowers and gifts for her grandchildren were always an exception to the budget. Katy was also extremely hardworking. Even in the midst of undergoing regular chemotherapy infusions, Katy was known to spread eighty bags of mulch entirely on her own. Katy's faith in Jesus grounded her throughout her life and especially in those last months while fighting cancer. She and Jake took comfort in their church community, Moments of Hope Church. In addition to her husband, Jake, and her seven grandchildren, Katy is survived by two daughters, Kerry and Jill. Her family can't imagine life without her as she was truly the 'rock' and 'glue' that kept it together.
An outdoor 'masked' service honoring Katy's beautiful life will be held on Saturday February 13, 2021 at 2:00pm at Hope Farm, 1390 Warren Road, Clover, SC 29710. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, consider a charitable donation in her honor to Moments of Hope Church who support multiple ministries in Charlotte and around the world.

Katy Jo Vargo was my Spanish teacher at Quail Hollow Junior High School in 1968 & 1969 when my family first moved to Charlotte. It says a lot about her in that I have many fond memories still from those classes 55 years ago. Just today I came across a yearbook from that time & saw her picture & looked on the internet to see what might be there & came across her obituary, which I just shared with my best friend, Fred McWhorter, that I met in her class back then. Though late, I send my condolences to her family & to Joe Garman, who was my typing class teacher back then as well......

Katy was my neighbor and babysitter on Ford Street, Beckley , WV. I would be her “little” shadow as she would apply her make-up and get ready for a high school date. Her dad, Joe, would tell scary stories at the end of the neighborhood hide and seek game. When Katy got married , I was unable to attend the wedding due to the birth of my first child but I watch the beautiful bride from my mom’s living room window. Katy was my idol as a young girl. When she went away to school, I would keep Mrs. Vargo company after school. I talked to Katy after her mother’s death. As only children we discussed the love and difficulty it was to let your momma go. Now Jill and Karrie, be thankful for such a special, beautiful mom you had. She will always be with you. I know you all will miss her but cherish the memories and love you shared. You are in my prayers for comfort and peace. Jane Moore Pierce

Katy was a special friend at Quail. She was of the few people I have ever met that was as beautiful inside as out. We have lost touch over the years but I am very saddened.
