Keith FREER Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on May 10, 2014.
LCol Keith W. Freer MMM, CD
1936 - 2014
Keith quietly passed away at VGH on April 25, 2014 at age 78. A real gentleman, Keith was kind, supportive and generous with his time and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He leaves behind to mourn his loss, his sister Sheila Edwards and her children and grandchildren in Australia and New Zealand, his Vancouver cousin Jeanette Leitch; his longtime Nanaimo friend Jan James; and his extended family in the Canadian Military; as well as cousins, friends and colleagues worldwide. Keith's military life was the part he treasured most, an involvement which spanned more than sixty years. Following cadet service while attending George Watson's College in Edinburgh, Scotland, Keith completed his British National Service in the Royal Signals regiment before accepting employment with a Canadian bank which brought him to the west coast of BC. He settled in Vancouver after working in small communities throughout BC and the Yukon. After arriving in BC, Keith enrolled in RC Signals Militia and rose from Private soldier to Commanding Officer in 744 (Vancouver) Communications Squadron. Keith was created a Member of the Order of Military Merit in 1973 while still a Non Commissioned Officer. Retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Keith continued his military involvement through service organizations including the Royal United Services Institute of Vancouver and the Defence Associations National Network. Keith served as President of the Army Cadet League of Canada - BC Branch in the 1990s and remained active with the league. He regarded his young cadets as his substitute family. For service to community and country Keith was awarded each of the Queen's Jubilee medals, silver in 1977, gold in 2002 and diamond in 2012. Early retirement from the bank enabled Keith to travel widely, particularly enjoying train travel to historic sites and ocean voyages that allowed him to experience many fascinating places and learn much about our world. He enjoyed several visits with family in Australia keeping ties close despite the geographic separation. Sheila's children and grandchildren retain a deep fondness for him and many happy memories. Grateful thanks to the caring staff at VGH. For information on the memorial gathering for Keith please contact [email protected].

I just learned of Keith's passing. I had the pleasure and privilege of serving with Keith from 1977 to 1993, gathering a lot of good memories along the way. He was a mentor to me and later a peer. He was most of all a good friend. My deepest condolences go to his sister and his other relatives. May Keith rest in peace and may we remember him eternally.

I served with Keith in the early 1970's. He was a decent, kind man, with a great sense of humour. I still think of him and remember him with fondness. VVV

Keith was a longtime friend of Early Music Vancouver, attending many concerts over the years. He lived just down the road from our offices and would regularly drop by to select his season's tickets and to always add a donation to his purchase. Always a gentle and friendly presence, he will be missed by his friends here, and we send our condolences to his family and friends.

Col Freer was our CO at 744 when I first joined the reserve unit in 1980. I remember foundly my first attempt in driving a stick was in his car when I was assigned to drive him and a guest to a event. The last time I saw the Col was in Kingston during the 100 year Anniversary. Sir Thank you for yor service. VVV

Keith was my Commanding Officer and Regimental HLCol. He had an excellent memory and relished in the story telling of past unit events and the people involved. The Doug Ware pizza delivery to the Officer's Mess Dinner at Jeriicho is one I heard many times through the years. Although showing his serious side most often, Keith was able to laugh about this particular event years later.

I will miss bumping into Keith on Broadway or at the Clinic and hearing about his latest travel adventure and his plans for the next trip.

Keith was an Officer and a Gentleman. May he Rest in Peace.

A faraway uncle but always generous. Loved seeing him here in Australia with fond memories made and thoroughly enjoyed our eventual visits to Vancouver. A true gent.

Certainly a great mentor and friend to so many young soldiers and cadets. Proud to have been part of Keith's extended military family. VVV
