Kenneth FURRIER Obituary

FURRIER

Kenneth Furrier (1934-2015) was a creative leader, a generous humanitarian, a devotee of the arts, a voracious reader, and a dedicated, passionate educator. During his remarkable 60 years in education, he held numerous leadership roles from teacher, to department chair, to assistant principal at Anderson High School; to president of the Board of Trustees and superintendent of Dohn Community High School. He powered the direction of education as a leader and director of many committees - from Director of Community Service, to key player on the Blue Ribbon Task Force, to innovative advocate on the Long-Range Planning Committee in the Forest Hills School District. He was a leading force and one of the founding members of the unique, non-profit, credit recovery high school for at-risk teenagers, Dohn Community High School, created in 1999. He was a patron of the New York Metropolitan Opera and generously supported the Cincinnati Symphony, the Playhouse in the Park, the Ensemble Theater Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Opera and the Cincinnati May Festival. In addition, he produced many Anderson High School musicals. His love for Anderson Township led him to become an active member on the Anderson Township Greenspace Committee - Ohio's first Greenspace Township. Preceded in death by his mother, Rose, and his father, John G. Furrier. Survived by his older brother, John G. (Jack) Furrier (deceased wife, Mary); nephews, Mike Furrier (Joelee); Rick Furrier (Franny); Tom Furrier (Cheryl); Greg Furrier (Jennifer); Jeff Furrier (Rhonda), and Sean Furrier (Tammy), all of Tucson, AZ.; Leslie Furrier of La Jolla, CA. and Tim Furrier (Sarah) of Scottsdale, AZ.; 24 great-nephews and nieces and 5 great-great-nephews and 3 great-great-nieces. In addition, Ken is survived by many, many devoted friends and colleagues. Visitation: Gwen Mooney Funeral Home, Spring Grove Cemetery, October 31, 2015, 10 am - 11 am; Celebration of Life at 11 am. A memorial dedication will be held at a later date.

Mr. Furrier was an incredibly kind, professional, and talented educator. He made a difference in my life and the lives of so many other students. He was perhaps more in touch with the students and their educational and developmental needs than any other administrator at AHS, and I had an incredible amount of respect for the man. Rest in peace, sir.
