KEVIN CURTIN Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 12 to Dec. 13, 2020.
CURTIN, Kevin Of Wellesley, MA, son of the late John J. Curtin, Jr. and Mary (Daly) Curtin, passed away suddenly but surrounded by family on December 10, 2020. As a devoted father, husband, advocate, teacher, friend and neighbor, Kevin was a force for good in his community. He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Jeghelian, and his treasured daughter, Francesca. He also leaves four siblings, Catherine Curtin Dyroff and her husband Peter of Duxbury, Joseph and his wife Carolyn of Wellesley, Ann Carroll and her husband Paul of Sherborn, and Daniel and his wife Kristen of Wellesley. Kevin was proud to be the brother-in-law to Leo Jeghelian and his wife Linda of Rockport and Lisa von Wendt and her husband Jan Paul of Needham, as well as a cherished uncle to his many nephews and nieces. Born June 20,1959 in Washington, DC, Kevin attended Milton Academy, Boston College and was a 1988 graduate of Boston College Law School, after which he served as judicial law clerk for U.S. District Court Judge William G. Young. Kevin committed his professional life to law and advocacy, serving locally, nationally and internationally. Over the course of his career, Kevin tried hundreds of jury cases and managed Superior Court post-conviction matters both writing appellate briefs and conducting oral arguments during an accomplished career that included serving as Senior Appellate Counsel/Grand Jury Director for the Middlesex District Attorney. He also was a dedicated adjunct professor, teaching trial practice at Boston College Law School and in the trial advocacy programs of Harvard Law School and the University of Virginia Law School. In 2017, he was named Prosecutor of the Year by the Massachusetts District Attorney's Association, was honored by the Massachusetts Bar Association with one of its annual "Access to Justice" Awards and received the American Bar Association's Norm Maleng Minister of Justice Award that honors those who understand that the "duty of the prosecutor is to seek justice, not merely to convict." He was also on the Board of the Appleseed Center for Law and Justice. Kevin was vice-chair of the ABA's Criminal Justice Section Council and co-chaired the Section's Committee on Appellate and Habeas Practice. He consulted extensively for the Republic of Uzbekistan, repeatedly travelling to that developing constitutional democracy and participating in the historic law reform efforts ongoing in that nation. Kevin loved to garden, golf and sail, sing in his church choir, read books, poems and the occasional Latin or Old English text, and listen to opera, blues and classical music. Mostly, he valued time with his family, particularly with his wife and daughter, whom he cherished above all else, and his best pal Bubba the dog. Wherever Kevin went, he brought unconditional kindness and a readiness to serve. His laugh, his loyalty, and his glowing spirit will be missed by all those who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John J. and Mary Daly Curtin Center for Public Interest Law at Boston College Law School. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the initial interment will be private, but a public celebration of Kevin's life will be held at a later time. For online guestbook, gfdoherty.com George F. Dear Susan and Francesca -- I just learned the news of Kevin. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Kevin was my worthy adversary in appellate cases when I worked at CPCS. An exceptional, radiant person, and someone I cherished -- one of the kindest people I've ever known, and with a delightful laugh that I can still hear in my mind, and that always cheered me, even when we were both battling our particular hardships. What a wonderful husband and father he must have been, I am truly heartbroken for your loss.

I worked with Kevin at the Middlesex District Attorney's Office in the Appellate Division for 5 1/2 years. He helped me prepare for many an oral argument. He was thoughtful, kind, smart, engaging, and had a great sense of humor. I'm shocked to hear of his passing so young. My heartfelt condolences to you, Susan, and Francesca, and all who knew and loved him. May he rest in God's eternal embrace.

So very sorry to hear of Kevin’s far too early death. Very happy memories of times spent in his and Susan’s company here in Dublin and in Boston too. I know he was proud of his strong Irish roots so will say ‘ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis’ (May his sweet soul be seated at God’s right hand)

Dear Susan and Francesca,

I had the privilege of knowing and working with Kevin at the UVA Trial Advocacy College. His dedication to others and to our profession was palpable and deep. Most of all, he was a fine colleague and a truly good guy. Please know that so many of his friends around the country mourn is passing, and will celebrate his life, me among them.

Dear Susan & Francesca and all of Kevin’s Family,

Please know my sincere prayers for Kevin’s eternal life in the LORD! I offered the Mass for Kevin this morning here at Saint John’s Seminary, inviting the priests and seminarians to join me in this great intention.

May Kevin now know the complete Love of the LORD JESUS who says, “Well done good and faithful servant, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world!”

God bless you all!

I was lucky enough to intern for Kevin at the Middlesex's District Attorney's office three summers ago. I can honestly say that there are few people I have come across in my life who have made such an impression on me like Mr. Curtin did. He was kind, respectful, and eager to help in any way he could. I am trying to pursue a career in law because of the experience I had with him that summer. I am stunned beyond belief that Kevin is gone- my thoughts and prayers are with his family. God bless.

To the Curtin Family:

Please accept our deepest sympathies.

Not only was Kevin very bright and capable, he was one of the nicest people. He truly lived the Jesuit tradition of creating men and women for others.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Michael Sullivan

I am so deeply saddened by this news. I met Kevin when he was prosecuting one of my clients many years ago. We developed a friendship that I treasured - a rarity between defense attorneys and prosecutors. Kevin was endlessly kind and curious, supportive and honest. I am sending as many comforting thoughts as I can summon to his family - please know Kevin will be missed by so many people. He was a wonderful person taken far too soon.
