L. Guy Palmer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 23, 2024.
L. Guy Palmer (1951-2024). Guy Palmer died peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 17, 2024. Guy was a man who gave freely of his heart and talents and found great reward in helping others. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. The throughline of his life was to be of service to others and that held true, and shined throughout, to the end.

The beloved eldest son of Robert and Dorothy "Debbie" (née Bauer) Palmer, Guy was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 22, 1951. Guy graduated from Lake Forest High School as captain of the men's swim team and continued his education at Trinity University. Guy's employment within the Internal Revenue Service piqued his interest in the study of law; he then attended the University of Detroit and University of Michigan law schools. As he developed his legal practice, Guy followed his passion for financial management, which led to founding his own tax law firm, Palmer Law Group LLC, designed to assist clients with tax-related issues across the U.S. and internationally. He was appreciated as a board member and consultant to several organizations, including Maryland School for the Deaf and Monocacy Aquatic Club. Guy also found fulfillment sharing his knowledge while teaching classes as a tax adjunct professor at the University of Michigan Law School.

Guy met the love of his life, Moira Tanis De Pree, while working on a ranch in Wyoming. They were wed in 1973 and were blessed to be married for more than 50 years. While raising their beloved sons, Ryan and Cale, the family loved their tradition of sailing and snorkeling throughout the Caribbean. Guy enjoyed teaching his granddaughter and many nieces, nephews, and others the joys of water skiing, sailing, and power boating on the waters of Cape Cod, the Great Lakes, and Lake Holiday.

Guy is survived by his loving wife Moira, sons Ryan, Cale (Farrah); granddaughter Ava; sister Robin; brother Ford (Anne); mother-in-law Nancy; mother-in-law Diana, sister-in-law Kris (Monte); brother-in-law Damon (Diane), sister-in-law Jean, sister-in-law Liz. He is also survived by wonderful nieces and nephews Alison, Derek (Paula), Marcy (Jake), Justin, Kelley (Max), Michael, Merielle, and grandnieces and grandnephews Cody (Isla), Haley, Jesse, Isabelle, Evelyn, Sadie, Riley, Layla, Bryce and numerous other loved ones. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Jim and father-in-law Jay (Diana).

A private family gathering will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a hospice in your community or the charity of your choice.

Guy has been our family attorney for over 30 years. We first met when I was trying to by an apartment building in Florida. Through so many personal and business activities, Guy was always the most delightful, thoughtful person we dealt with. His knowledge was so broad and his advice so reasonable he was the first person we would reach out to for help. As a mark of his talent as an attorney, I would just pass on one remark that we received after an anxious but successful negotiation with some extremely well represented folks on an important matter to our family: "You sure had a really good attorney write your contract!" That was Guy. His diligence on any matter he undertook was outstanding. More than all of that though, his decency and humanity shown through his approach to people. We will miss his good counsel.

Mr. Palmer was an amazing attorney and advocate for me when I sold my practice. He was the most thorough attorney I think anyone had ever seen. His attention to detail was second to none. He picked up on things others had missed. I will always appreciate his caring and meticulous work on my behalf. My sincerest condolences to the Palmer family.

Moira & Ryan - I cherish the memory of both our families as neighbors; and both of our "Ryans" as childhood friends in Libertyville. Guy's beautiful smile always brought joy! and his educated yet down-to-earth, good-natured spirit will be greatly missed. As noted here by many who knew Guy, his talents were a blessing in this world. My sincere sympathy and prayers to your family.

We send our sympathies to Guy´s family. He was our friend and trust
lawyer. I swam masters swim team one year with him at Hood College.
He was in the fast lane; I was at the opposite end. He gave my husband a swim video that really helped him.
We will miss him. Dr. John and Mrs. Madonna Vitarello

I learned so much from Mr. Palmer during his decades of service to our medical practice as a consulting attorney. I called him "Mr. Palmer" because I respected him so much. I honestly don't know how I would have made it through the last 18 years in my role as practice administrator without him. I shall miss him dearly.

I will always remember how BRAVE Guy was. The man faced countless physical challenges but just kept going. He never gave up or made a big deal about the multitude of problems he had on his plate. He never gave his disease one minute more than it deserved. He kept a positive attitude. I firmly believe that his "angel" wife never left his side and helped him through his journey to the very end. She was the perfect example of a soulmate.

Guy was a bright light in our world. We met as high school classmates our sophomore year in history class. He invited me to the Homecoming Dance that same year. I was so happy & excited to accept. What a fun occasion!

I was a big fan of the Lake Forest High School swim team, and I was usually in the bleachers cheering them on. Guy was a strong swimmer & team captain. A real standout.

I invited Guy to perform in our annual synchro swim club performance. He was a good sport & agreed to participate. This was a gutsy move on his part because at that time, young men were not usually taking part in the sport. He was just great!

His classmates & I are very sad about Guy´s passing. We know we were lucky to have him while we did.

Sincere condolences to Moira, family & friends.

Guy was my classmate from grades 7-12. He was smart, gentle, and always kind to me. I wish I had had the opportunity to get to know him better.

My father was a great many things, a handyman, a sailor, and a magician with numbers. For fifty years he worked in a field he loved to do. My dad once told me, "If you do something you love, you won´t work a day in your life." He also had someone by his side for more than fifty years who he loved, my mother, Moira Palmer. On April 17, 2024 at 8:54pm my father passed away with family by his side. He was blessed with a family who love him and miss him dearly. My father continues to live in the memory and hearts of these who loved him.
