Larry L. Whaley

Larry L. Whaley, 67, of Carroll Township, died Thursday, May 10, 2007, in the Rehab and Nursing Center of Greater Pittsburgh at Greensburg. He was born Jan. 18, 1940, in North Charleroi, son of the late Kenneth James and Eleanor Craft Whaley. He was a member of and deacon at St. Ellien Antiochian Orthodox Church of Brownsville and a member of the California Masonic Lodge. Larry was a 1957 graduate of California High School and received his bachelor of science degree in education from the former California State Teachers College. Mr. Whaley received his master's degree in education from Temple University, and he also attended West Virginia University, the University of Maryland, Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Cornell. Mr. Whaley retired as a teacher at the Keystone Oaks School District. Prior to that, he taught at Charleroi Area High School and the Oxen Hill School District in Maryland. Surviving are his wife, Terry Ellis Whaley; two sons and daughters-in-law, L. Michael and Toni Whaley, of Maryland, and Joseph C. and Melissa Whaley, of Carroll Township; two daughters and a son-in-law, Chrisann M. and Steven Majernik, of Carroll Township, and Carol F. Whaley, of Pittsburgh; his twin brother, Barry L. Whaley and wife Mary Ann, of Florida; 10 grandchildren, Joshua, Adam, Benjamin Whaley, Lylah Majernik, Nicholas, Abbigale, Aidyn and Zacharey Whaley, and Lucian and Julian Whaley Miller; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Frank N. and Barbara Ellis; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Hanna M. Whaley; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Haifa Ellis; and an aunt and uncle, Helen and Joseph Hurst. Friends will be received in the CARL J. SPALLINO FUNERAL HOME, 819 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Additional visitation will be held in St. Ellien Church, Fifth and Spring streets, Brownsville, on Saturday, May 12 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., the hour of service. Interment will be in Monongahela Cemetery.
