LAWRENCE “LARRY” E. STAHL
Devoted Father and Grandfather
After 18 years of living his dreams as the Grant County Airport Manager, Petersburg, W.Va., Larry, 91, peacefully passed away in his home on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. Larry will be missed by all who shared his love of God, family, airplanes, mechanical engineering, and a good debate.
Larry's life path led to him becoming one of the most recognized aeronautical engineers who was an expert at restoring antique sailplanes and keeping the love of sailplaning alive within the United States and it started when he joined the Air Force.
On April 8, 1948, Larry’s honorable military service began in the United States Air Force as a Senior Medical Service Specialist. He was only 17 years old and had not graduated from high school when he joined. He tested in the top 3% of the anatomy section of the ASVAB and was assigned as a medic. He saved several lives during the Korean War as the Senior Medic. His medical office consisted of a single bed where he removed each bullet, patched each patient, with seconds to spare before the next patient arrived. He received a medical discharge after serving four honorable years. He entered the Air Force as an aircraft aficionado and left with an overwhelming passion for all things that fly.
Larry’s aviation journey led him to being the lead engineer on an ocean going tugboat out of Seattle, WA to working on the assembly floor of Boeing while he continued his education. Later, Boeing promoted him to design engineer where he made molds for aircraft parts and he eventually designed and patented parts for several aircrafts including the B-52 Bomber.
Larry’s acute ability to conceptualize, design, and make his ideas reality were recognized by Hardee’s and was hired as their Director of Engineering in Rocky Mount, NC. Larry retired from Hardee’s 20 years later, making fast-food engineering the indisputable healthiest part of eating fast-food. He invented and patented the smokeless chimney, cutting fast-food pollution to almost non-existent. Ever notice the “air” blowing down from a door opening in a restaurant? It is called an “air-curtain”, you can thank Larry for inventing and patenting that to keep the flies out of your food. He even received recognition from the Queen of England for inventing an "apparatus for use in combination with a cooking range hood".
After retiring from Hardee’s, Larry and his wife Joan, searched for the perfect “next job” and it only had one requirement; must be managing an entire airport. Five years later, Grant County Airport in Petersburg, W.Va. had a small ad in a small-town NC newspaper, for an airport manager. Petersburg, W.Va. welcomed Larry and Joan to their Norman Rockwell town in 2000.
Over the next 18 years, Larry’s positive impact on the community, the airport, and flying enthusiasts, from all over the world is insurmountable. Everyone who encountered Larry became his friend. Pilots would purposefully fly out of their way to gas-up at “Larry’s” airport. He extended the runway by 3500 feet, brought the Civil Air Patrol to the community and was the Civil Air Patrol Captain, taught glider classes, could repair any aircraft, loaned towplanes to help other pilots, and was always available to provide advice, guidance, and teach all flight enthusiasts. Larry was also a collector of airplane parts. He had the largest collection of Schweizer 2-33 airplanes and Schweizer 2-33 parts outside of the Schweizer Company, that the company would actually contact Larry to see if he had a part a customer needed.
He also collected several internationally recognized licenses and certifications, to include the Master Plumber and Electrician License; Certified Flight Instructor Glider (CFIG; Inspection Authorized Mechanic (IA); and Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic (A&P); Certified Flight Instructor for Glider and Powered Aircraft; and the State of Wisconsin was the only state in the U.S. that allowed Larry to take the Professional Engineer (PE) test without a four year degree, he passed on his first try and received the PE Certificate of Registration.
Larry was born January 16, 1931, in Phoneton, OH to Elmer and Elsie Stahl, where he was also raised. He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Eidman Stahl, whom he married in 1961 and had 61 adventurous years together; four daughters, Terry Collins of Raleigh, N.C., Brandy Smith (Matthew) of Moorefield, W.Va., Rebecca Shanholtz (Richard) of Petersburg, W.Va., and Lynda Harper of Tacoma, WA; his five sons, Allen Stahl (Michelle) of Middleburg, FL, Roy Stahl (Jeannine) of Kenly, N.C., Carey Stahl (BJ) of Clayton, N.C., Gary Stahl (Rosie) of Port St. Lucie, FL, and Dale Stahl (Deanna); 20 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his two brothers, Floyd and Welford Stahl, and his sister Helen Shepherd.
In honoring Larry’s wishes, his body will be cremated. His family will receive friends on Saturday, May 14, 2022, 1-3 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg, WV. A memorial service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 3:00 PM with Pastor Rick Bergdoll officiating and with Military Honors bestowed by the Potomac Highland VFW Post #6454 Honor Guard. For many years I kept an aircraft @ the Grant County Airport. Larry´s arrival was a blessing.
Larry was a good, decent, patient man. I thoroughly enjoyed his company snd believe the feeling was mutual. I´m certain he is with the Lord.
Not to long before his passing, I spent about about hour with Larry on his golf cart. I´d sold my aircraft years ago, but for some reason I just decided to stop in and see Larry. We changed a few runway light bulbs and talked about family and flying. As always he asked how my wife was doing (she had beaten breast cancer in 2005, but Larry always asked how she was).
Larry was clearly aging and knew his days were numbered. I left W99 that day doubtful I´d see my friend again. During the hour drive home, I recalled our many times together, shed a few tears, and prayed for Larry to go peacefully. I´m so thankful for that last hour we spent together.

I met Larry in 1966. He was a special person who helped many people. He saved my wife and me in my married life after a question he asked me. That’s another story I will always remember. He said he would help me. He did. For many years I would go to his home and Larry would teach me the life that I have had in my year’s way gone back to that year in 1966.
He taught me to know more than the other person and he did just that. I ended up reporting to three Presidents over the years and it was all due to Larry Stall. I never finished high School. I quit at 14 years old to help my mother and the other kids. We had a family of five, who were poorer than church mice.
When I was 19 years old, I went into the service. I went into the U.S. Navy but I wanted to become someone who could make a difference in my life. When I came out I was married with two small children and that is when I met Larry. Larry taught me everything I needed to have a understanding of business. Larry gave me as my lifelong mentor a college education. How he did so much in his life which is an understatement as his obituary left out many positions and achievements of which it would fill many more pages. Larry and Joan had a wonderful life together. I will always remember Larry and now God has him. He helped so many people in his life and never asked for help in any way.
GOD blessed Larry. All of the many people in his life like me will always remember Larry. God bless you Joan.

Joan, as a child we were always excited when Uncle Larry was coming to visit. He was such a hansome man. We only saw him a handful of times throughout the years but never really knew much about him except he had "lots" of kids and he flew a plane large enough to fly his family with him. I so enjoyed our visit a couple years ago to really get to know him and be able to sit and ask questions and to know more about him and his family. It's so sad we had to wait so long to really "meet" him. Thanks again for your hospitality, Uncle Larry holds a special place in our hearts, as well as you. God be with you and your family in this difficult time. We love you!

Uncle Larry was a very special person. He reminded me so much of my Dad - Floyd - Larry's brother. The had a world of knowledge of planes & flying. There was so much he knew about & could do. I could sit & listen to him for hours. We had so much to talk about & so little time. I wish he had lived closer & had more time to spend together. I know he will be missed by family & friends. He will always have a special place in my heart.

Joan,And family.
I met Larry during my work with placing senior citizens in a part time work position. Larry and I had many many long talks and I respected him . He always would ask me why I was not confident in my skills. He would make me think about life and he told me how much he loved you and his children.
I’m am so sorry for your loss. I think Larry left a wonderful legacy.

Larry Stahl saved my life and the life of my student. I'm a glider pilot. There was a lot of debate in our club about "stalling an a slip" in a certain type of glider that Larry knew a lot about (sorry to the non-pilots out there). So I brought the question to Larry, I sat in his office for over an hour as he patiently helped me understand the aerodynamic issues at play. He gave me practical advice -- what to do if there is a problem. Fast forward 3 years and I found myself in a bad situation. I could hear Larry's word in my eagers as I struggled to get the glider down safely. Without Larry I would not have survived that situation. What a wonderful and great and generous man he was. A truly special life. Thank you Larry. Thank you.

Larry was one the the smartest guys I ever had the pleasure of knowing.
He ran at 125% with ever thing he did, and helped so many people who enjoyed then sport of Soaring.
A true renaissance man if there ever was one.
I hope St. Peter finds a place for him with clear blue skies and big white cumulus clouds from horizon to horizon.

Grandpa you ment the world to me. I am going to miss our talks and the stories you shared with me. I learned so much from you that I will always treasure it all. I wish I had more time to spend with you. I learned a lot about who I am and where I get some of who I am. You filled in so many puzzle pieces and I can’t thank you enough. I love you and hope my dad is with you. Please hug him for me and have him hug you. You will forever be in my thoughts. I will do my best to help grandma. ❤ I am so proud to be your granddaughter.
