Lázaro René O'Bourke December 27, 1933 - January 24, 2025

Lázaro René O'Bourke, lovingly known as René, was born on December 27, 1933, in the vibrant city of Cienfuegos, Cuba. From an early age, his passion for knowledge and unwavering commitment to excellence shone brightly. He attended the University of Havana, where he earned a degree in accounting, a testament to his sharp intellect and disciplined approach to life.

Before leaving Cuba, René endured three harrowing years in a forced labor camp under the regime of Fidel Castro to secure freedom for his family. Though he rarely spoke of what he endured during that time, his resilience and determination were evident in his refusal to be defeated. Finally, in 1969, René and his beloved wife, Paloma, embarked on a life-changing journey to the United States through President Kennedy's Freedom Flights. Settling in Costa Mesa, California, they began building a new life. René worked tirelessly for 28 years at Weyerhaeuser Paper Company, where his dedication earned him an award for never missing a single day of work.

In Costa Mesa, René and Paloma created a loving home, raising their five children: Mary O'Bourke, Lynn (O'Bourke) Pieterse, John O'Bourke, Henry (Kiki) O'Bourke, and Anna (O'Bourke) Prober. Together, they built a legacy of love, resilience, and enduring family values.

René was a man of passion, devotion, and fierce loyalty. He loved deeply, protected fiercely, and took immense pride in his role as a father. His children fondly remember his larger-than-life personality and his unique ability to make every moment special. René's joy for life shone brightest during family gatherings, especially on Christmas Eve. With his characteristic warmth and thoughtfulness, he searched tirelessly for the perfect gifts for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, delighting in their joy as they unwrapped their treasures.

Always ready for a spirited debate or a game of dominoes, René's fierce temperament and fighting spirit defined his presence. He brought intensity, energy, and a zest for life to every interaction. To those who knew him, René was a dependable and loyal friend, a source of strength, and a man whose generous spirit left an indelible mark on everyone he met.

René was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Paloma. He is survived by his five children, 10 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren, all of whom cherish the lessons and love he imparted. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories filled with laughter, celebration, and unconditional love.

René O'Bourke's life was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and family. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Care Choices Hospice in his honor. A public celebration of life is not yet planned.

You were both a mother and father for me for most of my life. You were the first person I would reach out to every morning to chat and text. I´m really going to miss hearing from you everyday. For now... im finding peace in knowing how absolutely precious our last month was together. I love you papi... and although today I´m a bit fractured ... I know there´s nothing I can´t survive or do... because "soy hija de René".

To my Hero Papi who was always on my side about absolutely everything, loved me unconditionally and never gave up on giving us the best life. My father always worked 3 jobs to make sure we all had everything we needed AND everything we ever wanted. Excellent husband to our beloved Mother Paloma. I miss him everyday. RIP now Papi. You lived a complete full life and leave behind an incredible loving family legacy. Siempre en mi corazón

Renee (Papi) wasn´t just a father in name-he was a father in action. He was there through life´s challenges and triumphs, never once turning his back or letting us down. In my own life, he became the father I looked to in moments of need, the one whose wisdom and love became my compass as I raised my own children. He was the man who never said goodbye without first saying, "I love you," a simple but profound reminder of the depth of his care.

For the past 30 years, I have followed in his footsteps, striving to emulate the kind of person he was: steadfast, loving, and full of strength. Though he may no longer be physically with us, I know Papi will always be right beside me. His lessons, his love, and his spirit will continue to guide me and everyone whose lives he touched.

Papi, I love you, too.

Because of Lynn´s sweetness & devotion to her Dad seemed like I knew him personally. Lynn would lovingly share good times about his courage to come to USA, his commitment to his Family both Kids & Grandkids. Lynn affirmed his great love for his Costa Mesa/Newport community, especially enjoying Ces Si Bon. What a beautiful contribution he made to the community and the great example of love for his Family. May God hold him close in His arms and comfort the Family during their season of grieving.

My memory is not of knowing him, but of knowing his daughter and working with her. She has brought together our team and made us all feel loved. She has shared beautiful memories of her "Papi" with us, and we can see the reflection of him in her.
