Leonard Lachendro Obituary

LACHENDRO
LEONARD L.
(09/16/29 ? 07/03/06) Well --- he finally did it. He bought the farm, bit the dust, kicked the bucket (well, he would have, if he'd had legs!). Loved by a few, respected by many, and FEARED by most, he leaves behind his loving wife, Audrey, exasperating, but cherished daughters (Barbara Lachendro & Susan [Roger] Matson), treasured granddaughters (Erika & Katie Matson), a sister (Lorraine Mutschler), a sister-in-law (Peg Lachendro), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death (within just a few hours) by his brother, John Lachendro. True to his nature (if you have to go, go in style), he picked the biggest monument that he could find (the Golden Gate Bridge), from which to have his ashes tossed. His last parting words to his beloved family were, "Don't forget the family motto: illigitimi non carborundum" (don't let the b---- get you down). A marine at heart (you can take the man out of the marines, but never the marines out of the man), he used his "diplomatic skills" to have two city libraries built (one in Bethel Park, PA and the other at the corner of Locust & Church Streets in Lodi), to impart jewels of wisdom to friends and family (whether we wanted to hear it or not!), and to make sure that things always were done his way. Those who knew him well will forever miss his warmth, generosity, sense of humor, and way with words. This obituary was personally approved by Leonard --- for, as you all know, he always had to have the last word!

Dear Audrey and family,

I remember you and Leonard from when I was a little girl, probably a time or two when I was visiting my Aunt Peg and Uncle Johnny. I recall what a good-looking couple you were.

My mom is Mary, Peg Lachendro's sister.

Please accept my sympathy on the passing of your Len.

What a wonderful send-off! He's the kind of guy I wish I had known. May the wonderful memories of Leonard sustain you all in the days ahead. And have a great time in San Francisco. I shall think of him every time I see the Golden Gate!

To Audrey Lachendro,

Millie Sochatoff Myers here, Audrey, to say that I remember Len and you with so much pleasure. Both of you, and the girls, were so gracious to Belle and me when we visited. The obituary captures him so well--I heard his voice as I read it.

I/we will miss Uncle Len. He was after all, a role model to me, much to mom's chagrin! He was an incredible guy.

I am speechless. Kudos to the best obit I have ever read. If this is any indication of the man that Leonard was, I'm sorry I didn't know him.

I am sorry for the family loss. I'm hoping you have many happy memories to get you through the lonely periods.

I don't know who this gentleman was, but this is a classic. I hoped he lived as his obituary read, with a sense of humor.

This is the best obituary I have ever read. I did not know Leonard, but spent many hours at the library in Lodi, so I thank him for that opportunity. My prayers are with the family.
