Lou Conyngham, wife of the late John Nesbitt Conyngham III, passed away peacefully at her home in Dallas on Monday, Feb. 8, 2016.

Born Oct. 12, 1925, in Livingston, Mont., to Anna Raschke Cooper Carpenter and Gilbert Simon Carpenter, she attended Wilsall High School and Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., completing her Bachelor of Arts degree at Pembroke College, the women's college of Brown University, in 1947.

Lou Conyngham's life was defined by her devotion to her husband and children, but her community service was a critical part of her life. Her board affiliations included chairperson of the Sordoni Art Gallery, the boards of the Junior League of Wilkes-Barre, Heritage House, Planned Parenthood and countless positions at Wyoming Seminary Day School.

Lou is survived by her children, Ann Kerlin Conyngham and her husband, Douglas Telling, Charlemont, Mass.; John Nesbitt Conyngham, Missoula, Mont.; Alison Conyngham Neisloss and her husband, James Neisloss, Upper Brookville, N.Y.; and Sarah Hollenback Conyngham and her husband, David Marshall, Hope Valley, R.I. Her eight grandchildren are Kerlin's daughter, Sarah Kerlin Young; John's (Jock) children, Walker Guthrie and Inga Caoilinn Conyngham; Alison's children, Kate Olivia, Julia Wright and Lily Hillard Neisloss; and Sarah's children, Anna May and John Richard Raithel.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., 140 N. Main St., Shavertown.

The family would like to express its gratitude for the unending devotion of Tammy Feher. We would also like to thank Mom's home health aides and hospice nurses at Erwine Home Health and Hospice Inc. for their compassion and care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Penn State University, Jack and Lou Conyngham Endowed Scholarship, Old Route 115, Lehman, PA 18627; Planned Parenthood, 63 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701; and the Myositis Association, 1233 20th St. N.W., Suite 402, Washington, DC 20036.

Kerlin, Jock, Alison & Sarah, my deepest sympathy on your mom's passing. I remember what a gracious lady she always was. I worked for your dad at the Greenhouse & Flower Shop many years ago and your mom would sometimes come down...not often. I remember how your dad's face sweetly smiled when he talked about your mom...she was his great love. How lucky you were to have her this long. They are now both together, and they take with them a way of life that we will never have again. Peace to you all. May she Rest In Peace knowing she left a wonderful legacy behind in each of you....Holly Nealon, Hanover Twp. Pa

I only knew Lou through repairing her appliances and I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed meeting and speaking with her. What a unique person! What a beautiful soul! When you spoke with Lou she truly listened. She was concerned with you! She cared about you, as a person, a human being. She had the gift of empathy and it showed. What a joy it was to speak with her and get to know her.I am saddened that I will not be able to speak with her again, but at the same time I am lifted up by the conversations we had. I will remember her and continue to think of them. Although Lou may no longer be with us, we can take comfort in the memory of her beautiful spirit, which indeed now surrounds us, and are able to feel the care and love she so graciously extended to others. My condolences to her family.
