Lucile CurtisBraithwaiteJohnson Lucile Curtis Braithwaite Johnson, 87, passed away Friday, July 19, 2002, at her home in Boise. Lucile lived a full and wonderful life devoted to her faith, her family, her friends, gardening, and the arts. Born in Salt Lake City, Oct. 20, 1914, Lucile was the second child and only daughter of five children born to Dr. George Nathaniel Curtis and Annie Hindley Curtis. Her childhood and youth were spent in Salt Lake City. After graduating from East High School in 1931, Lucile went to the University of Utah where she majored in Art, minored in English Literature and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's of Art degree in 1935. While at the University of Utah she played cello in the University Symphony and the University String Quartet. She was also a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Lucile continued to pursue her passion for the arts, studying arts and music in Paris for a year. She married her first husband, Edward Boyd Braithwaite, in Salt Lake City on Dec 14, 1937. Boyd and Lucile moved to Boise where she continued to paint and played cello with the Boise Civic Symphony. Sadly, Boyd passed away in 1948. A few years after his death, Lucile obtained a teaching certificate through Boise Junior College and then taught 5th grade at Franklin Elementary School. In 1957 she married Reynold F. Johnson. They spent 45 wonderful years together in Boise raising their children, serving in their church, gardening, enjoying their grand-children and spending their time at their cabin in Cascade. Throughout this time music continued to be a central part of Lucile's life as she directed church choirs and played cello for the Boise Philharmonic for its inception until 1971. Throughout her life Lucile enjoyed associating with many good friends. These associations came through many groups including The Hobohemians, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, The Friday L's and Family Home Evening groups. She was an active member of the Boise 6th Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for approximately 50 years where she served in many positions, including Stake Relief Society president for the Boise Stake. Poetically, in the last few weeks of her life she returned to sketching despite impairments from a cerebral hemorrhage suffered six years earlier. Always loving, learning, teaching, and serving, Lucile was an inspiration to all who knew her. The family would like to express special gratitude to the many caregivers from TLC who cared for Lucile in her home for over the past six years. Lucile is survived by her husband, Reynold; her daughters, Sydnie Braithwaite and Joan (Al) Panas; her son, George (Caralee) Johnson; her stepson, R. Kent Johnson, all of Boise; and her brothers, Dr. Homer (Enid) C. Curtis of Philadelphia, PA, David (Rose) H. Curtis of Salt Lake City, UT, and Dr. Clifford (Thelma) H. Curtis of San Carlos, CA. Reynold and Lucile have nine grandchildren. Lucile was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband and her brother George. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tues. July 23, at the LDS Chapel on Broadway in Boise. A viewing will be Mon. 6-8 p.m. at the Relyea Funeral Chapel. Lucile's burial will be at the Brigham City Cemetery in Brigham City, UT. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. on Thurs. July 25.
