Marie H. Griffin

CHATHAM — Marie Griffin died on Oct. 21, 2008, at Liberty Commons after a brief illness.

She was born on May 12, 1910, in New York, N.Y. to Louis and Mary (Sheehan) Huber, a "Blue Coal" representative and telephone operator.

After growing up in Lawrence, Mass. and Newark, N.J., she graduated from Mount St. Mary Seminary in Hooksett, N.H. She also graduated from the Newark School of Fine and Applied Arts in 1931 and Newark Teachers College in 1934.

Marie was married to Andrew J. Griffin of Lawrence in 1938. She and her husband lived in Hardwick, Mass., from 1938-1942. Marie taught school in Maplewood, N.J. from 1942-1945 while her husband served in the Navy. After World War II, she and her husband moved to Waltham and she became a stay-at-home mother. In 1955, they moved to Wellesley where she resided until moving to Chatham in 1969. She was a resident of Chatham for 39 years.

Marie was an accomplished pianist and artist. She was the owner of the Lighthouse Gallery on Silver Leaf Avenue, where she painted and taught until 2002. She was one of the original founders of the Chatham Creative Art Center.

She leaves her daughter, Andrea G. DuPont and her husband, James A. of Chatham; three grandchildren, Kristen and her husband, Vincent Dwyer IV of Milford, James and his wife, Amy DuPont of Westborough, and Danielle and her husband, Brandon Barnes, of Charlestown. She also leaves two great-grandchildren, Johanna and James DuPont of Westborough; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 25, at 10 a.m., in Holy Redeemer Church, Chatham. Burial will follow in Seaside Cemetery.
