Mark Diamond Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 4, 2022.
Celebrated attorney Mark Richard Diamond passed away on Friday, October 28th, 2022. He had been battling cancer for the past 18 months. He was 66 years old.

Mark was a partner with Rimon Law, where he worked for the past 10 years.Well respected by his colleagues and clients, Mark had an extraordinarily successful career as an attorney for over 40 years. He gained honors for his work as a lawyer in the financial industry. He was recently voted Lawyer of the Year in Private Investment Funds by the Lawyer Network in California, an award he received multiple times.

Mark was born in Chicago on October 6th, 1956, to attorney Abraham Diamond and Sylvia Barrish Diamond. He grew up in Wilmette, Illinois, attending New Trier West High School, where he was a National Merit Scholar. At New Trier, he was a member of the Debate Team and oboist in the Orchestra. He graduated at the top of his class. His undergraduate studies were at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He attended Law School at the University of Southern California.

Mark's law practice took him around the world, including positions in California, New York and Hong Kong. His law practice focused on private investment funds and broker-dealer regulation and compliance. Alongside his private practice, he worked with prestigious firms in the legal and finance spheres, including Coudert Brothers, Lehman Brothers, Deutsche Bank, Wasserstein Perella and Robertson Stephens. In his work, Mark helped structure and launch a number of hedge funds, managed complex employment issues and provided legal and compliance services to investment advisers, broker-dealers and other financial services companies.

Mark loved reading, high quality audio, spending time with his family, everything Grateful Dead, eating out, the building blocks of democracy and a fancy cocktail. In his life, he and his family lived in Hong Kong and traveled all over the world, including visits to China, Thailand, Australia, India and many parts of Europe. A big fan of San Francisco, Mark was a Bay Area resident for the last 20 years. He was a foodie who loved finding unique upscale restaurants, yet he would always say yes to a Chicago hot dog or corned beef on rye. Mark was quite the joker and led a themed Passover Seder every year, complete with thematic parody song sheets and sing-a-longs. Whenever you needed an answer to a trivia question, Mark was there with the answer - he used to say, "I know a little about a lot."

Mark is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ellen Bass Diamond, daughters Alyssa Diamond and Kimberly Diamond and his brother David J. Diamond.

Just found out Mark was gone. I remember him as a friendly face walking around the halls of New Trier West high school, but wasn't super close to him. We could have crossed paths several times as adults, as he was active in financial law. Robertson Stephens handled stock options for a Silicon Valley semiconductor company I worked for, and Wilson Sansoni Goodrich & Rosati handled an IPO for a startup I worked for. I also enjoyed the Bay Area food scene, and always loved a good hotdog. And I was also a Chicago attorney's son and a classically-trained musician, though I chose engineering instead. If I'd have known Mark was living in the Bay Area, I'd have looked him up.

Ellen, my name is Howie Fierstein. I am Mark's first cousin. His father and my mom, Jeanette Diamond, were brother and sister. My wife, Alice, and I met with Mark when you lived in New York. We are in San Francisco for a few days when I ran across this information. I was so sorry to hear. Growing up, we family was very close. [email protected]

Mark, the last two times we got together was memorable. It made me realize, that the reason you, Kevin, Craig and I became such close friends growing up was because we are so alike. We still are. Nothing will ever change our friendship. Ellen, I will always remember how Jill introduced you to Mark. It always puts a smile on my face. You two were meant for each other.

I am so sorry to hear about Mark. I was lucky enough to get to know him in the years of the real estate business with Ellen. After the 13+ years, you are family. The Jesery connection between Ellen and I a no brainer, but one of the reasons I think Ellen and I understand each other so well is a lot of the similarities between our husbands. A quick wit, smart, a litttle irreverent, a love of music and a general idea that if anyone else has a problem that it really their issue. Mark was always there to help proof read and help keep some perspective in some challenging moments in the real estate world. Loved getting to go to see Blondie and X together and Mark was the one to indulge me in dancing to old school music after a APR Presidents club dinner fest thingy where I had way to much white wine. :-) Ellen, I love you and am here for you, and cherishing the memories to keep him alive with us all.
