Mark DuMars Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 3, 2025.
Mark W. DuMars was born in Sharon, Pa. on December 31, 1939, the son of Percy and Florence DuMars. He had three brothers; Roger, Pete and Mike. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1957. He led the 1957 Sharon High basketball team to an undefeated season and the 1957 State Championship. He was named a First Team Parade Magazine All American. Mark attended Penn State on a basketball scholarship. He played for Penn State from 1958-1961. He was the leading scorer in 1961, and had several memorable contests vs. Jerry West and West Virginia. Mark was hired by Price Waterhouse as a CPA out of college in Pittsburgh Pa. He worked for Price Waterhouse from 1961 to 1981, first making manager, and then partner. In 1981, Mark founded and managed a business turnaround firm, Inglewood Associates. He retired from Inglewood in 2011 after a very successful career.

The story of Mark DuMars cannot be told without telling the story of his wife, Debbie DuMars. Mark and Debbie attended Penn State together and were married on December 30, 1961. You'll gain insight into this marriage when you know that it was Debbie who asked Mark out on their first date. Mark and Debbie spent the next 60+years together ; best friends, favorite companions, and each others favorite person. Mark liked to attribute much or most of his success to Debbie. And while that is not entirely true, it is certainly not all wrong. Mark and Deb had three children; Suzanne, Doc and Steve. No three siblings have ever had a better childhood.

Mark and Deb's kids had eight children of their own. Suzanne and her husband Dave had Maddy and Emma. Doc had Mia and Finn. Steve and his wife Sue had Nick, Luke, Jake and Georgia. Mark and Deb spent countless hours, vacations, trips, cruises and most birthdays with these 8 lucky kids. And they will tell you that no 8 grandkids ever had better grandparents.

Mark and Deb's children and grandchildren were not the only beneficiaries of their love, kindness and generosity. Many times a helping hand was given to a young person, not because Mark and Deb felt like they had to, but because it was the right thing to do, and there was no one else to do it. Nothing was ever asked for in return.

Mark DuMars wasn't just good at everything he put his mind to, he excelled. But none of it came easy. He out worked everyone around him, all of the time. And good enough, wasn't good enough. His work product had to be perfect.

He is survived by his wife Debbie, his children Suzanne White (Dave), Doc and Steve (Sue) and his grandchildren Maddy, Emma, Mia, Finn, Nick, Luke, Jake and Georgia. He will be remembered by all 14 each and every day.

I always felt inspired to ride more when I would see Mark ride and ride all around State College-up and down hills! What a great man, great wife, great family. His spirit will live for sure!

Mark and I were teammates on the Penn State basketball team for his sophomore and junior years. He was by far the best player on the team and we can thank him for any success that we had. We won about half of the games.
In 1961 I was in grad school, married to Liz (deceased) and living in Grad Circle Apt 5P. Mark and Deb were dating and were great company-5P was the go to place that year.
One night we decided to go to Florida for spring break. We had very little money, but Liz bought to the marriage a new car. So we had wheels. Deb immediately called her parents for permission to go. When they gave the OK, we thought they were really cool. Looking back they made a good decision. With very little money, we drove down and back without stopping. Mark insisted on bringing a blackjack. It was given to him as a gift from his father. For safety I guess. I made such fun of the blackjack that many years later Mark wanted to give it to me. I refused and hope that one of the kids has saved it. To my knowledge, it was never used.
I could go on and on, but you really had to be there. We were the best of friends for 65 years. Deb, I agree that remembering all the good times will be of some comfort.
I salute two of the best friends ever.
Peace. Wally

I never really new Mark except for the 3 months he was hired as a consultant by a company I worked for in State College, Pa in 1989 + -...I worked closely with him.......I have worked with many business leaders, marketers, ,managers, etc.. Most of their names I don't remember, but I do remember Mark and I have talked about him to my colleagues over the years...I think that says it all.
My sympathies.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Mark. My father Jack DuMars Sr. and Mark were cousins. My father went to all of Marks games in 1957 and he told me of Marks basketball abilities, great ball handler and could shoot from anywhere. Till this day when people here my name Dumars they ask me if I was related to Mark the basketball player. Pretty amazing after all this time. I am sorry for your loss.

So sorry to hear of this. My sincerest sympathy to Deb and family. Mark was a good friend to my late husband, John Fridley. They became friends at Sharon High and were part of the basketball team that took the State Championship in 1957. Mark was best man in our wedding. A good, good guy. May he rest in peace.
