Mark Morris Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 16 to Jan. 17, 2007.
Dr. Mark Loren Morris, Jr. died Sunday, January 14, 2007 at his home in Topeka, KS. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, January 19 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 600 SW Topeka Blvd., Topeka, KS. Dr. Morris was born February 3, 1934 in New Brunswick, NJ to Dr. Mark L. Morris, Sr. and Louise Weber Morris. His parents had built the second veterinary hospital in the United States for small animals, and Mark grew up living in his familys apartment above the animal hospital. His father was an exceptional veterinarian and in the course of his practice developed a line of therapeutic foods for dogs and cats called Prescription Diet pet food. In 1948, his father signed a contract with Hills Packing Company in Topeka to take over the manufacture and distribution of these products. That contract moved the family to Topeka in the middle of Marks junior year in high school. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1952 and then attended The University of Kansas until 1954. During this time became a passionate fan of K.U. athletics that lasted throughout his lifetime. In 1954, Mark was accepted into the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and received his DVM degree. While a veterinary student at Cornell, he met and married Bette McGehee, a student in the Graduate School of Nutrition. After graduation in 1958, the couple moved to Topeka, where Dr. Morris began his work in the family business, appropriately named Mark Morris Associates. Within just a few months of moving to Topeka, Mark was drafted and served as a Lieutenant in the U. S. Army Veterinary Corps from 1958-1960. He was assigned as a laboratory pathology officer at Fort Detrick, MD. After the service, Mark and Bette moved to Madison, WI where he did his graduate studies in veterinary pathology and biochemistry at The University of Wisconsin. After completing his M.S. and Ph.D. in 1963, Dr. Morris returned to Topeka and expanded the Prescription Diet line of products. He became a worldwide authority on companion animal nutrition, and his passion to improve the health and well-being of all animals through better nutrition led him to mentor and teach others in his field. He then developed the commercially successful line of products known as Science Diet pet foods, which is sold around the world today for healthy dogs and cats. As president of Theracon, Inc., a family partnership, he was dedicated to pet food research development, testing and education of the next generation of veterinary professionals. Working with Gary Clarke, then director of the World Famous Topeka Zoo, he developed the ZuPreem line of products for zoo animals. His son, David Morris, has continued to expand the line of products that now includes diets for exotic pets. Dr. Morris published widely and was a visiting lecturer in small animal clinical nutrition in the United States and internationally. During his career, he was invited to speak at more than 200 meetings around the world. Most notably, he is the co-author of Small Animal Clinical Nutrition through its fourth edition, which now has been translated into five languages. It is the standard textbook on clinical nutrition used to educate veterinarians throughout the world. In 1988, Mark Morris Associates and Theracon were sold to Colgate Palmolive Company, which owned Hills Pet Nutrition. Then with characteristic vigor and enthusiasm, Mark and Bette turned their combined focus to learning how to manage financial assets. Dr. Morris often credited the Institute for Private Investors as his single most valued resource for contacts and information. He would say that the greatest contribution he could make to charitable causes was to grow their endowment, enabling others to fulfill the mission Through the years, he served tirelessly as vice-president of scientific activities of Morris Animal Foundation, the largest, non-governmental, non-profit organization funding animal health studies in the United States. Dedicated to improving the health and well-being of companion animals, zoo animals and wildlife, MAF has funded more than 1,200 humane animal health studies since its founding in 1948 by his parents. Professional scientific organizations include American and Kansas Veterinary Medical Associations, American Animal Hospital Association, and American Association of Veterinary Nutritionists. Dr. Morris was a founding member and on the Board of Regents of American College of Veterinary Nutrition, and a member of the Cornell University Feline Health Advisory Board. In addition to his leadership in the veterinary community, he was active in the Topeka business community. Dr. Morris was a Founding Director and Board Member of North Plaza State Bank and a board director of the Security Benefit Group of Mutual Funds. He also served on the Board and Investment Committee of the Topeka Community Foundation. Dr. Morriss civic contributions include being a member of the Downtown Rotary Club; the Topeka Zoological Foundation; Topeka Friends of the Zoo; First United Methodist Church Board of Trustees and Finance Committee chairperson; the Kansas Masonic Foundation; the Grand Lodge AF & AM of Kansas. Education in Kansas was a primary value for Dr. Morris. He served on the Washburn University Board of Regents; was a Trustee of the St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City; and served two elected terms on the Topeka School Board during years of transition for USD 501. Dr. Morris will be remembered by his family as an affectionate and supportive husband, dedicated and loving father, and extremely proud grandfather. He never tired of pulling out photos of his long-awaited five grandchildren to show anyone who expressed interest. Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years, Bette McGehee Morris, Topeka KS; son Mark Lee Morris, wife Julie and granddaughter, Liza, Kansas City, MO; son David Morris, wife Darlia, and grandsons, Jack and Will, Kansas City, MO; daughter Cynthia Morris, husband Craig Curtis, and grandsons Mark and David, Eugene, OR. Dr. Morris is also survived by his sister, Ruth Morris Keesling, husband Thomas Keesling, Englewood, CO, their three sons Tom, James and Frank, and their families; and his mothers sister, Florence Weber, Denver, CO. Donations in memory of Dr. Mark Morris may be made to: Morris Animal Foundation, 45 Inverness Drive East, Englewood, CO 80112; First United Methodist Church, 600 SW Topeka Blvd., Topeka, KS 66603; Kansas Masonic Cancer Research Institute, Development Office, MS 3012, KU Endowment Assoc., 3901 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City KS 66160. Dear Bette, Cynthia, David, Mark, Julie and family, I am so very sorry for the passing of Dr. Morris. He was such a great man; honest, full of integrity, intelligence, wisdom, common sense, compassion and, obviously, love. He was an inspiration to us all. He, Bette and your family have touched and significantly changed many lives here in North Carolina. We will miss him terribly, but hope that some of his wisdom and example has rubbed off on us indelibly.

Dear Bette and entire Morris Family,
I view with sadness the passing of Mark L. Morris, Jr.
Mark was a true Veterinarian to admire. His accomplishments both within and without the veterinary profession were many, and he supported the profession in a way to keep it the noble profession that it remains.
I encountered Mark & Bette while he and I were Veterinary Lieutenants in the Veterinary Corps of the U.S. Army in the Pathology Division. I watched him at this early stage develop his skills as Veterinary Doctor Of Medicine, and an ever enveloping acquaintance with so many people in and out of the profession.
Carolyn and I were happy to be friends of Mark and Bette at that early stage.
Bette, and family, we extend our privelege of having known Mark and all that he did in his life, and the pride we have in knowing you both.

To the Morris Family,

I was very much saddened to learn of Dr. Morris' passing. Dr. Morris was truly one of the nicest persons I have ever met. He defined "good people". In working with him over the course of many years at our Pennsauken pet food plant, I always looked forward to seeing him. He talked often of things not related to work and that was always appreciated. He wanted to know how you were doing and he meant it. He got to know many of our plant personnel on a first name basis. If they only knew the history and stature of this man, they would have been shocked that someone like that would take the time to talk to them. But that was Dr. Morris. The world is a better place because he was here. The world needs more people like Dr. Morris.

January 22, 2007

As a new veterinary graduate my first meeting of Dr. Morris was in the ward area of Dr. John Haley’s South City Animal Hospital. John’s hunting dog Polly a permanent resident of the hospital refused to eat one of the predecessors of the military issue MSD. Some of the diet spilled on the floor was the size and density of buckshot. Everyone laughed and agreed it was time to return to the drawing table. If Polly would not eat it certainly no respectable military German shepherd in Viet Nam would.
I consider Mark and his parents to be one of the true veterinary heroes responsible not only for the improved life and health of our best animal friends but also the development and strength of the veterinary profession of which I am so very proud to be a member.
My love to the Morris family,
Iris Lee Wagner, DVM

To Bette and the Morris family –
There are no words that can soothe the pain or fill the void from the sudden passing of Mark.
I had the privilege and honor of knowing Mark and working with him over my 30 years with Hill’s. For me, Hill’s would not exist today as a global leader in nutrition without the innovative work and dedication of Mark, his father and the creative people, like Stan Teeter, he brought together to lead and motivate in the search for nutritional solutions for animals. I will always remember his smile and the way he could fill a room with his engaging personality. Stan’s comment in the paper “The main thing he was after was a solution.” describes Mark as I also remember him, a man ready to take on a challenge and to find a solution no matter what the problem or topic. I will always remember his enthusiasm for everything he was involved in. I believe Mark would have been a leader and a success in any field he had chosen as a career and he demonstrated that drive for success in all things her pursued in his life. He was a man of great knowledge, wisdom and stature, but someone who always had time to stop and talk to everyone he encountered. He touched my life and I am grateful for that experience. David’s remembrance of Mark’s advice, “that you make a contribution, and the world is a better place because you were around”, is how I will always remember Mark. Mark, I thank you for your contribution to the world and to my life. I believe you have been taken from us because God has called you to your reward for all you have done in this life and for all the people you have touched.

In particular I remember two special times: a trip in junior high to a KU-Colorado game with Mark and Mark Lee...he was so much fun to watch in his excitement for the game; and a KCSL dinner when he shared his excitement for the new things that were being tried. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mark's death. In the last two days, many memories of Mark and his family stand out. I was honored to know Mark, both personally and professionally. The two things about Mark that stand out are, first, before I would have any business discussions with Mark, he always wanted to talk about his family and my family. He was so proud of his grandchildren. And, second, Mark was always optimistic and positive about life. In fact, I saw him just a few days ago at a KU basketball game--he was all smiles and kept repeating "Life is good! Life is good!". I will always remember him with that smile and that upbeat attitude. My thoughts are with all of the Morris family.

Today while on vacation, I received a call that broke my heart. Mark and I go back to the day I started at Hill's 30+ yrs. ago and he truly was one of my first friends at Hill's. Over the years he and I would giggle over the ways that we would greet each other in the hallways at Hill's because we would run up to each other and kiss and hug - one, because we were great friends, but two, because we knew people were silently wondering "who is that black women that Dr.Mark is kissing" and then we would errupt in laughter. As important as Mark is to the Hill's history, he was just as important to me as my longtime friend. Morris family - please know that Mark touched my heart, just as he lives in your hearts. Peace to you all from a Hill's Pet Nutrition friend.

I learned Sunday that Dr. Morris had passed away. I wanted to express my sorrow to Mrs. Morris, David and Darlia, Mark and Julie and Cynthia and Craig. I will really miss Dr. Morris, his laugh and his energy.

I have lots of great memories of him. He was one of those adults that when I was a child took time to talk to me and noticed things like when I got my braces off. I remember how surprised I was when he and Bette attended my high school graduation. I also have so many fond memories of visiting with him at TCC, the Williams room and other locations where we would join the Morris's for dinner. Dr. Morris and Bette gave me a wonderful wedding shower and I have a great picture of him giving me a big hug at my wedding. I will treasure these memories and will really miss him. Dr. Morris and his family will be in my family's thoughts and prayers always.
