Martha Theis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 6, 2025.
Martha was born in Niles, Ohio on July 23, 1935 and passed away in Roseville, CA on May 26, 2025. She graduated from Howland High School, class of 1953. She entered the US Army in 1955 and retired in 1975 with the rank of Master Sergeant after having served in many parts of the country and in Germany.

Martha enjoyed genealogical research, reading, knitting hats, and cooking Sunday dinners for her family. For over 50 years she published a monthly newsletter for the mobile home community where she lived. She was generous, almost to a fault. She could not pass a homeless person without handing them a $5 bill (or more) and contributed to numerous charities around the world.

Martha is survived by her brothers Leonard of Lincoln CA, David of Lyman SC and her sisters Rose Cleverly, Virginia Andrews and Anah Zeboskey of Citrus Heights CA, and Mary Hart of Sacramento CA. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews in the US and around the world. She was preceded in death by her parents Virgil and Helen Theis, her brother Edward, sister Rena, nephews Mike Scherman, Joe Andrews and Mark Theis, and niece Hannah Scherman.

Funeral services were held at Calvary Cemetery with full military honors.

I´m blessed to have grown up with such a wonderful and fun Aunt! To name just a few fond memories - the beauty pageant sleepovers, banana split parties, & Christmas Eve´s. She was the center of the family, and was a solid role model for me as I grew up. I´m fortunate to have a lifetime of wonderful memories. I´ll never stop missing my dear Aunt Martha.

I can see some of Grandma Nickel´s when I see her picture. I am so sorry for your loss. The last time I saw Martha was at Grandma Nickel´s funeral. Hugs to all.

Aunt Martha was an exceedingly kind and caring person, and I was so lucky to get so many years with her. I'm devastated by her being gone, but so grateful for all we had together: she babysat me for years (letting me make the biggest mess I could every day), she helped me learn to swim a silly made-up stroke one summer in the community pool, talked to me for hours on the phone when I was lonely after school, loaned me a few (ok more than a few) dollars when I was broke in college, and was just always there with a silly story when I needed a smile.

She was incredibly special, and the world is a worse place without her.

Martha was a "mother" to all in her immediate and extended family. She held parties for everyone, especially at Christmas. She always sent birthday and anniversary cards. She was always ready with a warm hug. I will miss her. She was one of a kind.

Martha was such an amazing cousin. When I started selling candy and pies she would buy them all and always try to overpay for them even when I tried giving her the money back she would give it to my daughter Melanie. She had the most amazing smile and we had amazing conversations. We will miss her greatly.

Martha was a gem one of the best people I have ever known. She was a great person and she cared about everyone around her. A true humanitarian. I am honored to have been a part of her family of friends. I will always cherish the time I spent with her and the laughs we had. She was always shacking her foot when ever I called and I would ask are you shacking your foot and she would laugh and say yes. Love you Martha. Miss seeing your beautiful face.

Dear Aunt Martha -

I feel truly honored and fortunate that I was your nephew and you had dedicated so much of your life looking out for me ever since I was born 43 years ago. I will cherish the memories that I have of you, and in time they will make me smile and not sadden me as much as they do now.

I have to remember that not only did I lose a beloved aunt, but the world lost one of the most charitable and giving individuals to ever exist on this earth. In spite of that, I am confident that your caring and selfless nature will live on on those whose lives you touched, myself included.

I love you, Aunt Martha

Your nephew, Luke

Missing my wonderful sister who was also my best friend. Memories bring tears now, but I look forward to being able to smile when her face pops into my head. She made everybody feel special and wanted. We were all so lucky to have her as our guiding light. I love you, Martha.

Martha was such a wonderful person.
She always would tell me little things about my father, Alfred. Albert and I remember very little about him.
She always remembered Brandon on his birthday, which meant a lot to him.
It was an honor to have her as a cousin.
Rest in peace Martha.

My big sister. I have so many memories of her, and they almost all involve her kindness and care for others. She took others into her home to care for them, including our grandmother and mother when they could no longer live alone. She always thought of the needs of others before her own. Thank you, Martha, for always being there when we needed you and for accepting our help when you needed us.
