Marvelle Powell, 93, of McAlester, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at a local nursing center.The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home.Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at North Town Church of Christ with Hugh Campbell and Kevin Kasparek officiating. Burial will be at Tannehill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.Born Nov. 7, 1915, in Shirley, Ark., she was the daughter of Wiley A. and Tennie Joe (Gadberry) Turney. She came to the McAlester area with her family in a covered wagon at the age of 3. She attended Frink Switch School, Peaceable Valley School and finally McAlester High School.She married C. W. "Chank" Powell in McAlester on May 3, 1937. She worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot during World War II then worked at Hutchison Grocery and later at Seamprufe as a supervisor for 18 years.She and her husband moved to Scipio where they had a cattle ranch and raised quarter horses then later moved to Tannehill where they lived until her husband preceded her in death in 1979.She then did home health care and retired in 2004.She enjoyed sewing and gardening and especially loved caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.She was a member of the North Town Church of Christ.Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Benny and Reta Powell, of Tannehill, and Wade and Liz Powell, of Bache; five grandchildren, Jeannie Powell and her husband, L. L., of Ashland, Sherrie Effinger and her husband, Bart, of McAlester, Jyme Beth Cochran and her husband, Jay, of McAlester, Steve Powell and his wife, Alissa, of McAlester, and Mickie Foris and her husband, Chris, of Tannehill.Also, 10 great-grandchildren, Joshua Effinger and his wife, Amanda, Shiann Johnson and her husband, Jake, Tyler Shann and his fiancé, Cherish Timmons, J. W. Hammonds and his wife, Montana, Ty Cochran, Colton Powell, Sara Powell, Masen Foris, Dillon Foris and Charity Turner.And, three great-great-grandchildren, Bethany and Addison Effinger and Samuel Tux Johnson; one sister, Arselle Isbell, El Cajon, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four sisters, Pearl Wood, Merle Ship, Maybelle Campbell and Adel Painter, and one brother, Earl Turney.Pallbearers will be Steve Powell, Tyler Shann, J. W. Hammonds, Colton Powell, L. L. Powell, Jay Cochran and Chris Foris.Honorary pallbearers will be Oben Weeks, Alfred McConathy, Bill Coop, Earl Weeks and Jack Inman.

What a wonderful lady who lived a wonderful life. I had many discussions with Sister Powell when I worked with the youth at North Town. she will recieve her reward for her good deeds. God bless everyone and he will provide comfort. I am blessed to know Sister Powell.

Benny, Wade and family,
I am so sorry to hear of the death of your mother. She was a great lady and one that will not be forgotten easily by those of us who knew her well. I will always remember the "northtown" days. May God bless you all and help you through this time of loss.
