Mary Clark Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2024.

Mary Ann Clark (Grasso) passed away on May 2, 2024. She was born in Newtonville, Massachusetts on September 8, 1926.

Mary's long, wonderful life was a thread across many global events and world changes as well as a spectacular tapestry of personal experiences. She was born at home at 11 Jones Court in an Italian Immigrant Community nestled in Newtonville fondly known as "The Lake". Her brother, Joseph Grasso and her parents, Anna Maria (Battista) and Giovanni Grasso whose roots were in Castelvetere Val Forte, Italy, and the surrounding Italian Community in The Lake provided a rich cultural backdrop for her childhood.

The Castelvetere Italian dialect was her first language and she learned English when she went to school. In the 1960's when Mary learned Spanish in Peru, she jokingly said, "I am a speaker of three languages, and a master of none."

At age seven she traveled with her mother and brother to Castelvetere where they lived with her mother's family for six months. She experienced the adventure of a lifetime, while living in the village of her heritage.

When Mary was ten years old, her parents and other members of the community orchestrated naming Saint Maria de Carmen as the patron saint of their community. The committee brought a statue of Saint Maria de Carmen from Italy and honored the saint each year in a procession and festival. The celebration was a highlight of Mary's growing up years. She was among the children to walk in the inaugural procession and loved the excitement and joy each year as Saint Maria de Carmen was carried through the streets, everyone greeting her and reaching to touch her skirts as she moved through the crowds.

Mary attended Newton Public schools and always said her education really began when she left high school. Indeed, Mary's great curiosity about life fueled her brilliant self-education. She was well read and carried on lively conversations with all who had the pleasure of spending time with her. She loved playing Bridge and was an avid golfer. Mary never met a stranger, and she engaged in conversations with everyone and anyone in her path. She always made everyone feel included. Her artistic expression was cooking and baking. She loved preparing and serving food and entertaining. She was also a knitter and made many wonderful blankets and sweaters.

Roller skating was Mary's passion in her teens and early twenties. She was on skates every chance she had. It was at the skating rink that she met and fell in love with the man of her dreams – Robert B. Clark (Bob). They were married on September 30, 1950. Early in their marriage Bob attended MIT. Mary was proud to have put her husband through MIT. Bob's career took Mary and their family out West and to Peru, South America. As a family, they enjoyed camping, going to museums, board games, sitting down as a family to dinner, outings, and visits with friends and family.

One of the brightly colored ribbons through Mary's life was her many friendships. She had the blessing of wonderful friendships wherever she lived, and she carried on her friendships throughout her life. She maintained a lifelong correspondence with a friend from India that she met in her twenties while at MIT. In the last year of her life, she enjoyed a delightful visit with her dear and longest continuing friend of 61 years, Ketty Wadia. She loved her Tucson Bridge friends and always enjoyed playing Bridge and Mexican Train with her friends and family.

Her Italian heritage coupled with a deep faith and love of God, were Mary's anchors.

She found Jesus at an early age and her faith was manifested in loving others and her endless generosity. She relied deeply on God and could often be overheard saying, "Please Dear Lord, show me what to do.'

She leaves us with a great legacy. Some of the things she taught us – People the world over are the same; Always believe the best and always see the good in others; Forgive; Talk to strangers. Be generous; Travel to new places; and Learn something new every day.

Mary's greatest joy in life was her family. Each family member had a very special place in her heart. She loved spending time with all of them. Mary is pre-deceased by her husband, Robert B. Clark; her father, Giovanni Grasso; her mother, Anna Maria (Battista) Grasso (Finelli); and her brother, Joseph Grasso.

She is survived by her five children – Peggy Clark; Ellen (Elena) Torphy (Kevin Torphy); Sharon Lewis (Barbara Holland); Robert Clark; Charlene Murray (Eric Murray) and her

ten Grandchildren, and nine Great-Grandchildren.

Mary will be greatly missed, and her legacy will continue in the lives she touched while here.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on May 14, 2024 at Saint Cyril of Alexandria (4725 East Pima St, Tucson, AZ 85712) followed by a reception at Doherty Hall on the Saint Cyril campus.

Aunt Mary was not related to me but it seems I always knew her by that name. I was about 7 when I met her. We had just come from Lima, my youngest sister Najoo had recently been born, and Mom remembers Aunt Mary came over bringing a delicious pie. Mom said it was the best pie ever. Through the years there were plenty of opportunities to visit the Clarks as my dad and mom became close friends to Uncle Bob and Aunt Mary. Uncle Bob and Aunt Mary attended Greg and my wedding and it was wonderful having them there.

More recently Greg and I were taught to play Mexican Train. She beat us every time but we still had fun. There are many stories and every time we think of one it brings a smile. That was the type of person she was - thank you Aunt Mary.

I have so many special memories with Mary. Every time I was with her, she brought so many smiles and laughs. The grandma I needed and was so grateful to have. Pasta making is one of my favorite memories, as a child and again recently! I feel so lucky to have had her in my life and share so much with her including my wedding. I already miss you Mary and am so grateful you took my family in as your own.

There are so many loving memories of Aunt Mary. In all of them, she has a smile and warmth that I will always remember. I'll never forget her cheerful voice, with its unique Northeastern accent, sometimes mixed with Italian phrases. From the unforgettable Thanksgiving dinners in La Oroya to the cherished Christmas traditions she shared with us, Aunt Mary's presence was a beacon of love and energy that illuminated every room she entered. As the mother of five children, her love and devotion knew no bounds, and her presence brought joy to all who knew her. We were truly blessed to have Aunt Mary in our lives, and her memory will always remain a precious treasure. Her smile, her warmth, her laughter-these are the gifts she leaves behind, engraved in our hearts forever.

Stephanie´s Tribute to Grandma
As one of her grown grandchildren I saw how my Grandma lived a fabulous life. It
was an extraordinary life of transformation, joy, fulfillment and happiness. She
lived a life she loved. Grandma was true authenticity of highest qualities of living.
She was the highest example of life to the fullest potential, always creating
remarkable possibilities. And it always included having fun too.  This is very
unique and rare and a complete role model as a clear example for everyone who
personally knows her.
As one of her granddaughters for the years of my lifetime, Grandma was
extremely phenomenal and special to me, and I am grateful that I had the
opportunity to have a relationship with her as one of her grandchildren. I was so
fortunate to have grown up with Grandma for so many years ...
My Grandma was the clear inspiration for everyone. I will always and always
remember her deeply. She loved everyone - everyone in the family and her
friends. She was the positive person we know. She was truly custom made. No
one can replicate her. In my books, Grandma was a very authentic special one.
Remember Grandma is still here with us, everyday; always in our hearts.
This news is very devastating to all of us but always be positive and remember the
greatest memories with her.
I can see she was an outstanding mother, a dear friend, a wonderful grandmother
and great grandmother. Her memory will always continue to live in our legacy
though out our personal individual daily lives.
Those who knew her knew that she lived an authentic, beautiful life and wants us
to live lives we love too. Just always remember that!! Stephanie Lewis

Mary was very special to me. She was always a joy to spend time with and she exuded positive energy.

Mary was my most senior member of our "FortyTeen" click, where we were each identifying as much younger than our biological age. Mary was a stellar example of this and she lived right up to her late nineties, but all the while with a truly young and healthy mind, body and spirit. She was as youthful and vibrant as anyone I have ever met. I will always keep her in my heart very fondly.
Sending lots of love to her family and community.

Gosh Mom, I hate that you are gone. How can that be? You have been with me for 72+ years of your 97 years. You gave me so much love, fun and games. From a toddler to an adult. Amazing! The very best mom anyone could be. You epitomized what a mom is. How Blessed we five were to have you as our mommy. I already miss you. Your great spirit of joy and lovingness will be with me always. Thanks, mom.

What wonder Mary was. The Matriarch of a big extended family. I was privileged to be adopted into this family when I met her daughter Elena in 1986. 38 years later, we are still going strong. Bob and Mary lived with us for some time and taught me how good humans can be. Now I believe their spirits are together in the afterlife. All my love from Kevin!

mom, you exemplified the true meaning of being a mom. From my earliest memories of playing as a toddler with you, always making a game out of everything and throughout my life you have always been so much more than I can put into words. Total love, unconditional understand and support. I have so many wonderful memories of the adventures we shared all of our lives together. Thank you for such an indescribable love. I am very sad. I miss you.
