Mary Lail Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 27 to Nov. 29, 2023.
Mary Slade Lail, 83, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023 in Sandy Springs following a stroke in late August. Mrs. Lail was born September 8, 1940 in Griffin, GA to the late Mary Evelyn Dunlap Slade and Ira Hunt Slade. She graduated from Griffin High School in 1958 and went on to attend Valdosta State College. She wrote and published several books of prose and poetry. In the early 1980s she and her husband enjoyed performing with the Duluth Cloggers and even appeared on the Dinah Shore Show. She was involved with many community organizations including the Duluth Fall Festival committee as well as local and state education committees. Mrs. Lail was a true southern woman. To know Mary was to love her. She was never short on fresh flowers or sweet tea with a pinch of mint. Mary loved to make everything pretty and was the perfect hostess. She always had a smile on her face and her blue eyes were always sparkling. Mary is predeceased by her parents, five brothers, Ira "Dutch" Jr, Dick, David, Dan, and Dunlap Slade, and a niece, Deanna Callaway Wells. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Wallace Lail of Duluth, sons Ray (Katie) Lail of Lilburn, Slade (Kristy) Lail of Duluth, and Brandan Lail of Dawsonville, grandchildren Griffin, Spencer, Ethan, Carson (Lexie), Garrett, Sidney, Jamie, Scarlett, Isaiah, Emory, Hudson, Silas, and Georgia Claire Lail, nephews Chris (Terri) Callaway, and Kevin (Lisa) Callaway, great-nephews Derek, Devan (Lindsey), and Kevin Callaway, and great-niece Lauren Callaway. Visitation will be at Bill Head Funeral Home in Duluth on Thursday, November 30th from 2 - 4pm and 6 - 8pm. Funeral services will be Friday, December 1st at 2:30 at Duluth First United Methodist Church. Flowers are welcome and donations to the Woody Gap School in Suches, GA would also be appreciated. Since I was best man at Mary's and Wallace's wedding over 60 years ago, my friendship with Mary has deepened. I knew her as a fellow poet and a dear friend. I will miss her and miss knowing she is there in Duluth or Suches doing things to brighten the world.

My sweet Mary you was the best neighbor a person could ask for. My heart breaks knowing I want never be able to come sit on your mountain porch and have ice tea talk and watch the humming birds. I will miss hearing you laugh and looking at your smile. I always said you was a true southern lady. My grandkids will miss coming and seeing the cookie lady and getting their two cookies I can still see you waving and throwing a kiss to us as we backed down the driveway. It saddens me thinking that when I drive by your house and seeing the light on and knowing you're not there. As they said to know you is to love you this is so so true. I know this is good bye but only for a little while because I know your in heaven and I will see your smile and hear you laugh again. Love you sweet cookie lady your friend Jeanette.

Mrs Mary from the first time I met her always made us feel like family. Mary was a true Southern charm and always had little gifts for no reason to share with others. My heart felt sympathy to Dr Wallace ,Dr Slade ,Carson and their families during this difficult time. Prayers for Gods peace and comfort. Love you Rock
